Thin top lines...now I understand

When I first started golfing there was a lot of terminology that I just couldn't understand. However, the more I've played the more I've got it. Looking pretty, costing more and being nigh on impossible to hit I didn't understand why anyone would want forged blades.

Now I have improved my wedge play to nick the ball off the surface I can see how they offer a crisper connection. I look at my AP1 PW and see a shovel compared to my 52 Vokey GW.

Don't worry I'm not trading in for a set of MP68s (just yet ) but it's given me an extra incentive to drastically improve my ball striking!

It took me nigh on 20yrs to do the same, and 18mths ago traded in my Zing2 Pings, for the sleeker lines of AP2's.

I'm not sure entirely whether its down to that, but as my H/C dropped to Singles for the 1st time ever, it has to be a factor .

And here I am now drooling over the MB's.............

Surely the top line is more an aesthetic thing? Contact is not influenced by it, but a sharp leading edge and narrow sole certainly give a different feel compared to a thick sole.

I swapped my Ping eye2's for Mizuno blades 20 yrs ago and never looked back, it's horses for courses though and the thin top line and thinner sole isn't for everyone, it can be intimidating and judging from the amount of tour players who swing the pings to great effect it isn't the deciding factor on a good strike.

I traded in my Wilsonstaff Di7's 2 weeks ago for new Wilsonstaff FG Tour irons and i cant believe the difference in accuracy and ball strike with them....And im off 19...
Im getting a much better ball flight with them.
I know that there maybe not as forgiving as game improvement irons but there not impossible to hit either.I love them.

I certainly think a top line can influence confidence. I hated the thicker style of the X20's and even the tour burners I had. The R9's aren't too bad but the thinner topline and smaller head on my new TP's really inspire confidence and I feel that I can really hit a good shot. It just sits well behind the ball

I think if I dedicate myself fully to the challenge and get down to a low single digit handicap at the end of the five years I might just treat myself. If I complete the challenge I'm definitely treating myself!!!
