The two Ronnies sketchbook

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Ronnie Barker's dead.

It has to be said, though, that there hasn't been a TV double act of such talent since. :(

I was meaning just the general quality of the show. As you say the nearest there is now is ant & dec

I know you were, Chris, and I agree whole-heartedly. Watched The Two Ronnies as a kid with my dad and still love them today.

When the show was at the top of the ratings they did a stage show of it at the London Palladium and they were absolutely brilliant

Chris

I love the two ronnies, just for Ronnie Corbetts line in retro lyle & scott jumpers. Four Candles is obviously my favourite sketch.
:D

TV like this does still exist, you just have to look harder for it, as there are so many channels broadcasting mostly rubbish!

Prefer the Fork 'Andles sketch myself

But I think it boils down a to lack of ambition ( for the want of a better word ) by the viewers. Sit down, mentally switch off, play with phone, give your money to the show's producers and feel you're participating in the programme

I don't think its a lack of ambition on behalf of the viewer. If its quality they will watch it. That is why half decent dramas like Casualty etc survive and period costume dramas with a good story are so popular. The isse is a lack of ambition by the commissioning editors and producers not being prepared to take the time to invest in a decent duo. The two Ronnies did a live 30 minute show at the start of their BBC careers which was a huge flop and nearly killed their careers but there were peole prepared to give them time to refine their act. That simply doesn't or won't be allowed to happen these days and comedy acts have to be a polished article and a rating success from show one. I think its a huge reason why many top comics don't do their own shows. Of all the main ones only John Bishop stands put as someone regularly doing it and even his show isn't an out and out comedy show but filled with celebrity inserts and vox pops to feed the next segue

television kills comedians , they need to come up with new material week after week, then when they tour if you go to see them live , you will have seen and heard it all before .
Keep off the tv and you could use the same act night after night to a new audience for a whole tour.
But i must agree , watching the two ronnies they were very funny and clever and it is still very entertaining to watch . Much the same as fools and horses / faulty towers . Occasionally on Sky they will show Dave Allen / Tommy Cooper or others from that era and they are still good today.

I dont think they would be very popular today.
For a start they are not American
Secondly, they dont shout and swear enough.
Thirdly, they don't have any embarrassing illnesses
And lastly, they're both male so would have the sexist brigade after them.

I used to love the 2 Ronnies but a bit like Monty Python we remember the classic sketches and forget the ones that weren't so good.

I think there have been some excellent comedy sketch acts since then though e.g the early Harry Enfield and particularly the Fast Show (Paul Whitehouse is a genius).

Closest nowadays I would guess are Mitchell and Webb, and Armstrong and Miller. I haven't really watched them a lot but the little bits I've seen did make me laugh (love the street talking RAF pilots).
