The Short Game

1 shot from the tee to the fairway.
1 shot from the fairway to the green.
2 putts.

Where is the short game, please?

2 putts - there's your short game right there.

Can you guarantee that you'll two putt every green???

Also, can you guarantee that you'll hit every green in regulation??? If you can then you'll be the best golfer that ever walked the earth. If you can't then you'll need a short game.

If you miss the green with your approach shot, laying up on par 5's leaving you with a short 3rd shot into the green.

Basiclly anything from roughly around 100 yards and in is classed as "short game" in my eyes.

Is putting really the short game? I say this because Dave Pelz has his "Short Game Bible" and a separate "Putting Bible". I assumed when people spoke about the short game they meant chipping/pitching/bunker play, treating putting as completely separate.

I always think of the short game as being anything from inside 120 yards. Should also be the part of the game that is practiced the most.

My own goal is to get the ball in the hole in no more than 2 shots from that distance or less. Don't do it as often as i'd like but it's what i strive for.

I personally bracket chipping and putting together as the short game. I guess it's anything that requires a gentle touch rather than an all out, hefty blow.

Plus, you'll rarely have a putt over 50 foot so all your shots will be 'short'.

I agree with Tim, for me putting is seperate altogether from the short game, as stated by others anything 100 and in although for me I tend to concentrate more on 60 and in and also just off the green.

Tim,
Have a read of this mate.....
It " MIGHT " make you take the blinkers off.... :(

That shows Tiger hitting one shot down the fairway and one onto the green, ready for a birdie putt, whilst mere mortals are still hitting their third (probably wide of the green).

I agree, but are those not called approach shots? I reckon what most people mean by the short game is the delicate little chips from 15 yards off the green, required because they missed the green with poor approach play.

Peltz isn't daft.

Short game book = $ millions $
Putting book = $ millions $

Simples.

I would say that the 15-30 yard shots are the hardest to consistently get close to the hole. Anything shorter is usually a straight forward chip, anything longer is normally a measured swing with a wedge (Dave Pelz type shot). The 15-30 yard shot is where feel and judgement are needed the most.

Today i played 9 holes and had 3 shots from that range. One was a lob shot off a bare lie over a bunker onto a downslope, next was a lob shot from rough over a bunker and the last was a straightforward chip and run from 30 yards up a green. Three shots of similar distance but 3 different challenges.

I would agree with tim on this one, I would class putting as a seperate thing to short game, I consider chipping and bunker play my short game. Reason why I would say putting is different is purely on the type of stroke you use. (i know Bobs v-easy is designed to help make it similar for certain chips but overall its different)

Wasnt it McIlroy a little while said he doesnt need a good short game as if your long game is good then you dont need one.

Even though I said I agree its different thing I believe you need a good short game to get you down to the low handicap, just to bunker save or up n down for par when you miss the green.
