I need to find some consistency. So many times this year I've had 10 pars, 2 birdies and still walked off the course 14 over par. I can play great golf for about 14 holes. The other 4, well anything can happen. And its not like they're the same holes. Very frustrating.

Won the September medal and should have won October too. Only 2 shots out at the end but I had 3 triples and 2 doubles.

So cutting the triples and doubles down to plain bogeys should see the handicap back to 8 from the 11.1 its currently sitting at - a drop of 2 this year.

Well since I enjoy Winter golf the season is just starting, but in terms of summer season I want to: -

- Cut Hcp from 15 to 12
- Join a club at a decent cost or join my home Municipal
- Meet another regular "crack of dawn" playing partner
- Practice more. Maybe practice Sat & Sun one week and play a round the other.
- Stop spending soo much money on gear :D
- Work seriously on my concentration levels this winter, I tend to loose it easy after a decent shot or hole (the glove on & off method is so far working to a degree).

Here are the stats to date from SS2

Fairways Hit: 52% (Hcap Std: 10)
Greens In Reg: 25% (Hcap Std: 12)
Putts Per Round: 33.54 (Hcap Std: 15)
Sand Saves: 15% (Hcap Std: 11)
Birdie Conversion: 10% (Hcap Std: 22)
Par Scrambles: 17% (Hcap Std: 18)
Penalties Per Round: 0.57 (Hcap Std: 6)

Competition Rounds Recorded: 54

Doesn't take a genius to work out that I'm missing too many greens and that my short game (especially from bunkers) isn't good enough. Having been reunited with my original coach it is the main thing I want to focus on over the winter.

My aims for next year are to play more consistantly in competitions (only defended my handicap once which I won), to get down to and stay at 12 (two shots to find) and to start breaking into some of the bigger team events and competitions.

Homer,

I risk feeling your wrath in saying this and who am I to comment as i'm only a 27 handicap but dont you think you over analyse your game far too much?

Fairways Hit: 52% (Hcap Std: 10) - So you basically hit every other fairway, why does this stat help?

Greens In Reg: 25% (Hcap Std: 12) - I've never looked at this, you could be on the gir but 30ft from the pin. or just off the green on a par 4 but 10ft from the pin. I know which one i'd prefer but it doesnt make the "stats" look good.
Putts Per Round: 33.54 (Hcap Std: 15) - Yes as the game within the game I do feel this is a handy stat to know and the only one i feel is usefull.
Sand Saves: 15% (Hcap Std: 11) - This actually gets logged? i cant believe there is a stat for this. you want to hit more GIR.
Birdie Conversion: 10% (Hcap Std: 22) - Is this how many birdies you get on average?
Par Scrambles: 17% (Hcap Std: 18) - not sure on this one either, is it paring a hole where you havent hit a fairway or GIR?
Penalties Per Round: 0.57 (Hcap Std: 6) - not sure what this is.

Please dont be offended by this homer but I just cant see how this analysis helps. I know when I've not hit enough fairways, i know when i've not par'd enough holes. I dont need stats and percentages in my head telling me that i'm rubbish when I already know i've played like it.

Maybe i need to start doing this to improve but my golf pro once told me to forget about the shot as soon as i've played it... whether its good or bad. Dont get bogged down with the bad ones and dont get too excited with the good ones, just forget about it and concentrate on the next shot, thats the one that matters.

Now i'm going to hide behind the sofa!

No need to hide behind the sofa , Minty. Stats and analysis are like the Marmite of Golf: loved and loathed in equal measure.

To clarify your queries as to what some of the stats mean:

Birdie Conversion: this is how often you convert a birdie chance after hitting a green in regulation. If you hit 4 greens and get one birdie, the stat would be 25%.

Par Scrambles: this is how often you save a par if you miss the green in regulation.

Penalties per round: this is the number of penalty strokes per round (e.g. Out of bounds, lost ball etc). O.O.B. and lost balls count as 1 penalty stroke.

Here's my stats for the year: I am averaging 1.2 penalty strokes per round compares to 0.57 for Homer, that's a big difference.

Fairways Hit: 54% (Hcap Std: 9)
Greens In Reg: 28% (Hcap Std: 11)
Putts Per Round: 33.26 (Hcap Std: 15)
Sand Saves: 7% (Hcap Std: 24)
Birdie Conversion: 11% (Hcap Std: 20)
Par Scrambles: 21% (Hcap Std: 14)
Driving Distance: 240 (Hcap Std: 7)
Penalties Per Round: 1.21 (Hcap Std: 13)

Cheers

Andy,

I take it you have developed the software that works out all these stats? I dont like marmite and i dont like stats, i wonder if there is a link between the two.

Maybe it does help people but I just think golfers know that when they are not driving the ball well so they go down the range and practise, I think golfers know when they are not hitting decent approach shots so have a go round the pitch and putt etc etc.....

Homers going to get you. Only kidding. You are quite entitled to your opinion but I think you are slightly astray. I don't analyse as I'm going round and merely record the basics (fairway hit yes or no, GIR yes/no and where I missed these two area e.g. left right, short of the green, long or couldn't go for the green) number of putts and whether I got up and down from sand.

I have found it a hugely useful tool for working out what areas are problems after every round and so when I was going to the range or practice ground in the evenings I had something positive to work on rather than just going through the bag hitting balls. Also SS2 allows me to produce stats for my pro so he can see over time where I have improved and what areas are still weak and we can concentrate my lessons on what needs working on.

I hear what you are saying especially about GIR but it shows that I am not getting it onto the dancefloor at all, especially from the fairway (I only hit 32% of greens when I find the fairway and 15% when I have missed the fairway with my drive). I accept that 10 foot on the apron of the green is better than 30 foot on the green but how often does that happen. It is more a case of chipping back from the rough or playing from a bunker and neither have been particularly strong suits.

If you don't like keeping stats then I'm cool with that but for me it is a useful tool. No offence taken by your comments and I appreciate your honesty

thomas, depends where you play, some places it's just easier to lose one (or several :D).

got to say I tend to agree with minty on the stats (though not on the marmite!). I know I need a short game, doesn't need a calculation to tell me that.

The birdie conversion stat is a bit wooly to me, as is the GIR - you could could hit the green with no earthly chance of a birdie due to distance/gradient whatever (and possibly a marginal chance of a 2) yet it will count against you on one stat, yet for you in another.

presumably a sand save is up and down out of a bunker? no prizes just for getting out then?

Homer,

Each to their own mate, We all have many different techniques and strategies to get our golfing game as near to perfect as possible.

I dont think there is a pen with enough ink nor a pencil with enough lead for me to write all my shots down.

Anyway here's to achieving next seasons targets.
