Truly disgusting. What is it with folk that think they can vandalise historic monuments. Do they want there 15 minutes of infamy.
If there is any positive, experts think the tree is healthy and may sprout again.

The tree is indeed 'healthy' (poor word, but it's good enough) - and it's a sycamore, so it will indeed sprout new shoots from the stump that's left behind. But it will still be a generation before there's anything of note, or anything that's approximate to the landscape feature it used to be. The lad may well have been angry about something, but he's still a git!
