Came across this interesting article today (it's a PDF file), which compares how amateurs compared against the pros - and Tiger in particular - when playing on a PGA Tour course (Torrey Pines South Course). It looks at driving distance, fairways hit, GIR, putts and so on and splits some of the amateur figures into 2 categories - 10 handicap and under and over 10. One of the most intersting stats was that the average drive for the under 10 handicappers was a mere 231 yards while for 10 and over, it was only 195 yards. Clearly those American amateurs are no match for this forum...

Doesn't mention Tiger started playing in nappies with an ultra competative father who spent his entire youth priming him for the big time and most of us started playing when we needed an excuse to escape the missus!

I think people underestimate the difference his Father made to him, especially when it came down to his Dad preparing the mental side of his game.

If you look at most exceptionally high achievers in fields such as sport and music you often find a very strong parental influence and support from an early age.

I don't that's for sure. I have watched and read alot about Tiger and Earl.
As you say the mentality that Earl instilled in Tiger right from the start was evident. It was even more evident following the the death of his father and Tigers slide from superiority on and off the golf course.
