Am I the only person sickened by the reception afforded to the pope since his arrival in the UK, this is a man was aware of and did nothing about the rape and systematic abuse of hundreds if not thousands of children.

In fact he was the man who was give the task of leading an investigation that looked into abuse by two senior Cardinals in the Vatican but decided to ignore it.

He should be refused entry to the UK not be treated like royalty.

Never thought I'd say it but I agree with Freddie!

It's a disgrace why can't the hugely wealthy catholic church pay for the costs for this trip?

£20 million for a guy to come here and wave at people and preach about morality???

As part of the Hitler Youth he would have been here many years ago if it wasn't for our brave servicemen and women!

I was waiting for someone to post on this. Surprised it took this long.

For all the above reasons he should not have been welcomed here. I'd rather we had a visit from Mugabe.

Also, a recent poll had 70% or more people didn't want him here. If this is the case, why can't I see the news, or read a paper without the flippin pope being in it. It isn't news. There are 6 million catholics in this country, and out of them, only 50,000 bothered to turn up to see him. Arsenal get that twice a week.

I can understand the reception in terms of the catholic faithful and pomp and ceremony at the events themselves.

What I can't understand is why it is blanket coverage on the news and radio with normal programming sidelined to "Go live to Glasgow to hear the Pope speak...." etc. It's simply not major news to me and I suspect the overwhelming majority of the population and I can't think of any other leader on a state visit that would get one tenth of the coverage this is getting.

I'd like to start by stating i am a Catholic, and a practising one at that.

I didn't go to Bellahouston yesterday, firstly because i was working! :p
But like a lot of people, i am not in favour of the Visit.
There was a suggested donation of £20 per person going, but i think the Church has more than enough money to pay for the visit on it's own.

As a tax payer, like many other people i feel i should have a choice over whether i want to contribute to this or not.
Apologies if i offend any patriotic brits here, but it's like the monarchy, i pay towards their up-keep, but why? I don't want to!

My faith is important to me, i like to keep it private, but that doesn't mean i believe-or follow everything the Catholic Church proclaims.
No contraception, sex before marriage and abortion stances are out dated, and i feel at 36 i can make my own mind up on most situations i come across.

As for the child abuse issue, simple. Like any other criminal, if there are charges to be answered, these people should be tried and convicted as appropriate. Doesn't matter what your job is.

I really can't understand all the dweebs who sit on their moral high ground and go and protest at him.

Crap happens and it aint just happening in the Catholic Church it is happening all over the world in all walks of life.

As for those saying that they are disgusted with his stance against Homo's please just deal with it eh?

I don't like marmite (no pun intended) but I aint going to lose sleep if the Pope/Queen/Joe Bloggs came out and said they did as it is their choice.

Life's too short,I just could'ny imagine myself or indeed anyone I know standing with a sign up and screaming abuse at him because they disagree with what has been happening or his thoughts.Get a bloody life!

And by the way I am a Proddy.

Rant over.

Listen it is vile stuff but what I am saying is that it isn't involving me so I really couldn't give a flying f''k if he is here or not.

Crap happens and surely it is up to authorities to clamp it out not for dweebs to stand with placards when in 99% of cases it has sod all to do with them.

So he can ignore as much child abuse as he wants and still be awarded a royal visit to the UK as long as the kids are not yours

Your a nice guy

On you go Freddie keep making things up about me,I know you aint had a wee porky pie on here in a while.
And it is you're by the way.

I am saying I cannot understand all the folk who think by standing with a placard and shouting abuse at the Pope it is going to make any of the problems better, getting the authorities to prove it and act on it is and I cannot understand for the life of me why you would feel the need to stand and do such a thing when it is obviously not being noticed even in the slightest...totally pissing against the wind.

Anything else you would care to surmise about me? :D

And by the way I aint got any wee ones of my own..

Apparently, when they have to choose the next Pope, it won't be a hushed and secret affair any more.
The Vatican will involve the public more in deciding who succeeds the present Pontiff.
They're even going to make a TV programme about it.
Pope Idol :D

Thats how I read your post, that as long as it didn't involve you then is not your problem, if its not meant like that then I m sorry.

Protesting is sometimes the only way to show the way the people feel its the way things have always been done, what other options are open to people.

Simple mate - if we all had the same attitude as you no one would be called to account for any wrong doing. To compare things that the catholic church condone, with marmite, is utterly ridiculous.

All the Catholic Church needed do from the off is permit priests/cardinal/popes etc to get married so they can have relations with women (or men if they're that way inclined) so they would never contemplate the abuse of defenceless children.

Suppressing probably the strongest urge in human nature by making grown men celibate was never going to work and shows how out of touch the Vatican is to still enforce this.

However these men knew what they were going into by joining the priesthood so of course should face justice for their crimes.

As for the Pope's visit, he is still the leader of 1 billion catholics and should be offered the correct state visit status to reflect his important position.
I don't hold him responsible for abuse done by others, he will have advisors like any leader trying to spin every issue to their ends, but they and he should have shown more leadership and been quicker to out and condemn the abusers. Has been swept under the carpet by successive Popes for decades so it's not just Benedicts fault.

The Hitler Youth thing is awkward but I don't believe as a youth he would have known what Nazism was really about, he would likely have been pressured into it and it would've been more like you or me joining the Boy Scouts. You can't criticise every German footsoldier because their leader was a nutter.

Like most religions catholocism seems so out of touch with the modern world, most young people in the UK just don't seem to want or need any of these religious faiths.

Young people do need moral guidance however, society is in a mess in this country, don't know what the answer is I'm afraid. :(
