The Other Mags

TG's issues in my opinion stem from the fact that they can test any number of drivers, irons, putters etc and you know what the top three will be in any particular category. There is no deviance from Ping TM and Callaway with the odd intevention from Mizuno or Titleist. Never a chance another brand like Adams, Benross etc get a look in.

Again I would argue that they have really bigged up MD golf in the past, as the kids say. And one could argue that the other mags are as bad.

As an example, in this months GM the Pro V1 gets 4.5 stars for value at 50 odd quid a pop. And the DX2 gets 4 stars at £25 a pop, despite them pointing out that it's just about as good as balls twice the price. I remember the TM Burner HL, or whatever they are called, getting something like 4 out of 5 for innovation, when the review explicitly stated that there was nothing new to see and little innovation. And GM just happened to be giving away TM Burner HLs that month in a promotion.

And there are so many examples of the usual brands getting the top reviews and no one ever getting a bad review in all mags. I would say at least TG have the balls to rank them in order so they risk offending some brands.

When you also look at the Top 100 I'd also guess (even though its denied) that advertising and fear of offending plays a part in ALL magazines.

I've let my subscription lapse, a couple of what I thought were fairly week issues and an increase in GM Promotion pages (or more adverts in other words), I obviously understand that advertisements are a necessary evil but the quantity is getting too high; from now on I'll have a quick leaf through when it's on the shelf and decide whether to buy it or not.

You should try buying an Amercan golf mag. I once saw something in one that was not an advert, but it was very fleeting.....

Yeah I've seen the same, clearly stating clubs don't innovate much, then getting 4 and a half stars for innovation!

Tg not worth the paper it's printed on. Golf World and Gol International are quite good. Very underrated mag is National Club Golfer

What he said ^^^^

GM is by far the best IMHO but they should be a little bit more savvy to their subscribers though and have competitions available to them only not just their forum members. Maybe they should be more like the Runners World forum where on their website they have features for subscribers only but that wasn't the question was it? :smirk:

I took out a years subscription to TG a few weeks back. Its was £29.99 for the year and it came with 2 dozen srixon balls which are around £13 a dozen. These are the balls I use anyway so I thought I may aswell have the subscription for a extra £6.
I'm still yet to receive the balls and my first copy of the magazine though.

I also went through quidco and it said I will receive £6 cash back but I'm yet to receive that too :mmm:

Possibly true in the past but I'd challenge anyone to buy the latest issue and not say it's a decent read. Interviews with Westwood and Bubba plus 4 other players

This is a huge improvement over what TG used to be - virtually no interviews with any players at all at one time.
