I was thinking about getting one of the many golf apps now available like fit for golf and was wondering if any other people use this app or similar and how have you found them ? Thinking I should start trying to get more flexible and maybe even a bit more strength and these apps sound quite good ?

What's your background to the gym and training in general?

I've used a few different apps in the past, most of them are ok, but more aimed for people who don't have much gym experience. I found them handy for seeing if there are any different exercises I'd never seen before, but in terms of a routine I'd rather build my own, but I accept not everyone will want to do that.
My other observation is also that a lot of stuff that is claimed as "golf specific" is a bit overrated. Getting stronger, faster, more powerful and more flexible in general will benefit both your day to day life and your golf.

Most of the apps have some form of free trial, so no harm in trying them out and seeing how you get on.

I used Jamie Greaves golf fitness and his app for a while, it was okay but I think a lot of the exercises that are meant to be ‘golf specific’ are a bit of a myth. A lot of the work with bands and some stretches etc are pretty good for loosening up for golf but for the most part they’re just regular workouts. Don’t really use any golf specific anymore.

I did boxing from 17 to 27 was ment to turn pro but wasn’t interested think deep down I knew I was a decent amateur but wouldn’t have done much at pro level.
I trained 6 days a week when I boxed so I do get tunnel vision when I’m into something.
I’ve never done weights or went to a traditional gym and was always told to stay away from weights by boxing coaches as they make you punch slower. So have zero experience with weights and not interested in getting bigger I have quite a large frame I would prefer to get more stripped out if anything.
I’m 6ft 1 and 15st 7 so with my frame I would say I’m pretty much on weight maybe 7lbs off at most.
Just what to be a bit more flexible I was talking to my coach at the weekend and he says if I was to get more speed that’s the way to do it.

The fit for Golf app does give a free trial period to see what it's like.

Mike Carroll whose app it is when I have heard him on podcasts does not pretend that any of his exercises are golf specific .

He is trying to provide a range of exercises that will be of benefit to golfers to enable an increase in strength , speed and range of movement.
He provides different programs with video instruction according to time age experience and equipment availability.

Personally I think they are quite good but only take a few things form them and go to the gym using some of them.

There's a lot of myths out there about weights stunting kids growth, making people slow, making people not flexible. It's frustrating how easily they get spread around. You're unlikely to get massive by accident, people who are big put a lot of effort into getting big.

Flexibility can improve golf speed, but so can improving power and technique among other things.
In the simplest terms if you want to get strong move heavy weights, if you want to get powerful move moderate weights at high speed, if you want to get flexible move and build strength in end range of motion.

If you have no gym experience an app could help, you probably could also just look up a basic strength training program and it would do the trick too.

FWIW, if flexibility is the main aim, nothing beats Pilates (1 to 1 with a good instructor in a well-equipped studio with a reformer etc).

Getting leaner also helps flexibility and cardio workouts can help with that and general metabolism.

Strength training is nowadays advised to everyone for healthy ageing and is the basis for any swing speed improvement.

Whether to use apps or just do it, depends on how much time and motivation one needs. Personally, I started by choosing a few things to focus on and keeping manual notes as I progress.
