The Open and BBC.

You have to say that in my opinion the BBCs coverage of The Open is pretty poor. Forcing kids to sit and watch it, is more likely to put them off the game than inspire them. I'm a digital subscriber and both Sky Sports and BT Sports coverage, again in my opinion, is far better than the BBCs.

I actually don't think that is a fair comment Steve for these reasons.....

You can castigate the BEEB for not doing more TV golf coverage or trying to negotiate more coverage (perhaps they have...perhaps they haven't) but what they do on the OPEN is IMO, fantastic...this is from memory

First two days the 9.00AM start on the TV which goes through all day uninterrupted until 7.30 when then there was an hour, might have been 90 mins catch up highlights.

I seem to remember the Saturday last year the R & A moved t times due to weather and that was covered in detail keeping you up to date

All that coverage was across the I PLAYER and stayed on there for a couple of weeks afterwards so there is ample time to see something again....and there is separate WEB coverage....

The Production values are as good as needed at this present time (I note SKY have dropped 3D which Golf was perhaps the only thing it was any good for....and that was minimal), and the mix of commentators, and other features that they did to mix things up a bit, especially on the first two days generated "other" general golfing interest.

Then on the final day the climax was covered to the final Putt and Rory's win was put in perspective.

This is alongside what is done on 5 LIVE, which is also IMO excellent.

I think you can have a go at the BEEB for much...Poor coverage on the OPEN is not I believe a correct thing to say

The way young people go to watch things does need looking at going forward...in fact TV stations may not be here in a few years time...but that is a separate issue

It's a fair point well made. I agree Sky's has more bells and whistles and some good innovations, but I will happily put up with the beebs for the lack of adverts.

I prefer Sky's coverage but TBH, it's a personal pref. Others prefer BBC and fine. As long as someone shows it (not BT ;)) I don't mind.

They cover it very well and Sky have moved the goalpost on golf coverage , its only the adverts on sky that kinda spoil it , will they lose it , yes for sure , money talks ...............ask Chelsea and Man City

And then they ruin it all with the damn poem at the end!

And that's the point really...as I said in my original message most of the SKY golf coverage is excellent especially on the ET.

Mind you........don't forget that I don't believe (and i am sure someone can put me right here if what I say next is wrong) that SKY don't produce anything apart from the anchor coverage....all the actual golf is produced by EUROPEANTOUR PRODUCTIONS and the various rights holders take the feed and do their own commentary....I think that is correct.

The OPEN is done directly by the BBC......or it used to be done that way but actually they sold off BBC OUTSIDE BROADCAST to SIS I think. Perhaps even EUROPEANTOUR PRODUCTIONS do that as well....that would be interesting to know.

Anyway....however the coverage is produced the real subject is making sure that the OPEN is seen by the widest possible audience. The Cricket analogy would lead me to think that would drop dramatically if it went to SKY.
