The Open and BBC.

Can't help but think that sky would do a much better job. And give the open the justice of coverage it deserves. Hate the commentary on BBC with the exception of Frank Nobilo last year.

With sky I recon you'll get more red button options of featured groups/holes. And most likely more coverage. There's nothing worse when on BBC when coverage starts at 10 but the actual golf doesn't start till like 11:30 and u have to just hear about the play on the course instead of seeing it.

I personally don't see there being an issue with someone else taking a go at the coverage. If you don't want to pay for it then don't no one is making you. Why should everything be free.

I have no doubt at all Sky would provide a more 'modern' coverage and they would use a lot more innovative techniques like shot tracker etc etc. But is that worth the losing the long term bigger exposure that the game gets on the BBC, as even the smallest viewing figures on prime time BBC dwarf the biggest viewing figures Sky Sports will get. There are very few sports events that get so much prime time BBC TV dedicated to it. Also at the end of the day it is 4 days of strokeplay golf, and with the best will in the world and the most innovative production techniques used, it is still a bit boring for most of the time. So why lose the exposure for a slightly better production of essentially the same thing?

Plus to be honest I am happy to put up with an admittedly inferior production of the event in return for no adverts every 15 minutes.

The exposure is clearly not working cos golfing numbers are declining. 4 days out of the year are not going to make people play if they see it on the TV. Yeah they may say that sounds like a good idea but when they actually look into it will most likely be put off by the price.

If the BBC are to make a difference they need to be showing golf regularly to get people interested.

And as for the adverts I'm happy with that instead of hering Peter allis talk about people having a great time on the beach while watching them play on the beach or out on a boat every year. Or see a slow mo of a kid eating an ice cream. Fair enough BBC don't have adverts but they show a hell of a lot of guff that is just as bad.

Another nail in the coffin for the Beeb. I was asked to do a survey this week by sky and the crux of it was, would I still subscribe without the bbc channels? Apparently Bbc are trying to hike up their whatever their charges may be to sky. I'm not sure how it would play out re tv licenses , but I could easily live without the bbc.

I would be gutted if the BBC looses the rights to the open. I think it's by far the best commentary of golf, no adverts. Pete Allis is emense. I think the BBC as a whole is a class act above sky/ itv.

But if adverts gave them the power to battle Sky for all sports, surely it's got to be better than losing them all.

Wasn't there a thread last year about how often sky had adverts whilst broadcasting the masters?? I'm sure everyone was complaining that there was 25 minutes of adverts for every hour of golf. Then soon as the BBC started showing it on the weekend they halved the advert time, typical of sky.

Would be great if they could incorporate a "pay to view" system like Sky.
I would gladly pay a fiver to watch the open on BBC.
Add it to my licence fee next time it's due.
There must be a way to do this with todays technology.

Please don't go back to bloody Lineker.
His last attempts to bluff his way though as a golf pundit were bloody awful.
I was shouting at the TV as they showed recent shots taken by players and he kept telling you the result before they showed it.
Example of what I mean:
"While we were watching that, Furyk was putting to save his par. Lets go over to see that now, where he unfortunately missed it"
The only thing worse would be if they used Clare Balding. AGHHH!!!

I really want experienced and knowledgeable golf people doing commentries and punditry. Don't care how old they are as long as they know what they're talking about.

I love(ed) the BBC coverage- and Peter- anyone who doesn't and likes constant advert interuptions is mistaken.

Big soft spot for Peter Alliss. could listen to him all day, some great old stories, he obviously knows his stuff and has designed some lovely courses (Castle Combe).
Ken on the Course is always good to watch.

Having said that, also like Radar Riley too

Assuming the sport will go into further decline because it's not shown on terrestrial TV is wrong because the younger generation generally isn't watching broadcast television at all any more. This is a problem facing more than just golf, the movement of the future audience away from broadcast television is affecting all television production. Now, I'm loathe to see another sport lost from the BBC's screens as a victim of money but to survive and have any chance of growing a new audience it has to adapt. I'd trust the R&A to see those threats on the horizon and act appropriately.

I'd agree with that. It's sad to see that the BBC cares more about darts than golf but I don't think participation levels are likely to be affected. It's not as if there's any golf on the BBC any other time.

I'll be sorry to see it go, though. I miss elements of the BBC coverage - Allis, Ken Brown and Cotter are all excellent - but if I never have to see Lineker front another golf broadcast, I'll die happy.

Would be sorry to see it lost as grew up with BBC golf coverage and still favour it now over Sky , really enjoy Aliss & co and will always have a soft spot for Mo ;)

From the BBC's view its much cheaper to cover snooker or darts than to have a full outside broadcast crew, multiple cameras, huge cranes and miles of cables on a golf course

Unfortunately these days everything is run by blooming accountants.

Don't like adverts. Question is though, Adverts and Sport on BBC or Sky?

Shame someone at Augusta doesnt limit them to the seven and a half minutes that i think is the case with the host American broadcaster!
