Spot on. Unfortunately, oodles of cash in hand blinds the powers-that-be to the long term detriment. As in English cricket.
Can't help but think that sky would do a much better job. And give the open the justice of coverage it deserves. Hate the commentary on BBC with the exception of Frank Nobilo last year.
With sky I recon you'll get more red button options of featured groups/holes. And most likely more coverage. There's nothing worse when on BBC when coverage starts at 10 but the actual golf doesn't start till like 11:30 and u have to just hear about the play on the course instead of seeing it.
I personally don't see there being an issue with someone else taking a go at the coverage. If you don't want to pay for it then don't no one is making you. Why should everything be free.
I have no doubt at all Sky would provide a more 'modern' coverage and they would use a lot more innovative techniques like shot tracker etc etc. But is that worth the losing the long term bigger exposure that the game gets on the BBC, as even the smallest viewing figures on prime time BBC dwarf the biggest viewing figures Sky Sports will get. There are very few sports events that get so much prime time BBC TV dedicated to it. Also at the end of the day it is 4 days of strokeplay golf, and with the best will in the world and the most innovative production techniques used, it is still a bit boring for most of the time. So why lose the exposure for a slightly better production of essentially the same thing?
Plus to be honest I am happy to put up with an admittedly inferior production of the event in return for no adverts every 15 minutes.
But if adverts gave them the power to battle Sky for all sports, surely it's got to be better than losing them all.I would be gutted if the BBC looses the rights to the open. I think it's by far the best commentary of golf, no adverts. Pete Allis is emense. I think the BBC as a whole is a class act above sky/ itv.
But if adverts gave them the power to battle Sky for all sports, surely it's got to be better than losing them all.
My feelings exactly :thup:Big soft spot for Peter Alliss. could listen to him all day, some great old stories, he obviously knows his stuff ...........
Assuming the sport will go into further decline because it's not shown on terrestrial TV is wrong because the younger generation generally isn't watching broadcast television at all any more. This is a problem facing more than just golf, the movement of the future audience away from broadcast television is affecting all television production. Now, I'm loathe to see another sport lost from the BBC's screens as a victim of money but to survive and have any chance of growing a new audience it has to adapt. I'd trust the R&A to see those threats on the horizon and act appropriately.
Don't like adverts. Question is though, Adverts and Sport on BBC or Sky?I love(ed) the BBC coverage- and Peter- anyone who doesn't and likes constant advert interuptions is mistaken.
Wasn't there a thread last year about how often sky had adverts whilst broadcasting the masters?? I'm sure everyone was complaining that there was 25 minutes of adverts for every hour of golf. Then soon as the BBC started showing it on the weekend they halved the advert time, typical of sky.
