Scheffler reminds me of Pete Sampras constantly winning Wimbledon in the 90s. No real flair, just sheer consistency.
Didn't it chuck it down at Birkdale when Harman won? I'm sure I can remember him waggling away in his waterproofs with me screaming at the TV "Just hit the damn thing".When was the last time the weather really kicked in at The Open? I can't think of one in recent times. Maybe the odd session but not over a few days to really rough players up.
Is that my memory playing tricks? When was the last time?
Most of the top Europeans grow up playing that as well because if they have the talent they are off to the States to play college golf at 17.I'm more surprised that the top 4 players were all from the USA who tend to play most of their golf in 80 degrees on tree-lined parkland courses.
You might want to have a word with BBC sport. Their bulletin, BBC breakfast, led with McIlroy, not Scheffler, ended the golf section with an interview with McIlroy. Fitzpatrick was not even mentioned.
Pretty much the same the day before. Sadly, the BBC joined the obsession this weekend. They wrote their story before the action.

I actually sat down and watched a film with the missus and missed the last 9 holes or so as it was a forgone conclusion that Scottie was winning at a canter.First major I’ve not really paid much attention to, granted I was away on a golfing weekend with the lads but I didn’t watch any live stuff at all and only caught Friday nights highlights because the missus wanted to watch them![]()
No flair?? Have you not seen his swing? Have you seen what he does to hit a draw? I don't understand this attitude, I love the way he plays, I think he's very inventive. Just because he consistently good to a ridiculous level, that doesn't make him 'robotic' as people say. Would we prefer he chucks in some crap shots to make it more entertaining? He two-whacked out of a fairway bunker yesterday, what more do you want?Scheffler reminds me of Pete Sampras constantly winning Wimbledon in the 90s. No real flair, just sheer consistency.
He is pretty even tempered and doesn't show much emotion or personality on the course. That's why I compared him to Pete Sampras. He gets the job done with ruthless efficiency, which doesn't make good viewing for spectators on the course or on TV. There is no drama at all.No flair?? Have you not seen his swing? It's funny that you portray this as a bad thing, because the ones who do show their emotion on the course - Hatton, Clark, Garcia - get absolutely slated for it as well. Unless you mean Scottie should walk around the course grinning from ear to ear at how good he is.He is pretty even tempered and doesn't show much emotion or personality on the course. No, you are right in the sense that someone coasting to victory is not great TV viewing. But he is still amazing to watch if you forget the competition and just appreciate his near-flawless golf.![]()
I haven't said it's a bad thing, as an individual it's a huge strength. Yeah, sorry, I was viewing it as a negative comment overall in conjunction with saying he had no flair, which I didn't think was true. I think it's weird to say his golf is boring just because he's relentlessly good. Some of the shots he hits are out of this world.Did he say it was a bad thing!?
Or did you jump to the conclusion that because he was being compared to Sampras and had no real flair, you thought that was a bad thing?
Some pretty average sportspeople (in terms of results) have tonnes of flair. Some of the best are boringly steady. Not every top sports person has flair, otherwise Ballesteros would be less memorable, as all the top guys would have his flair.
I'd say a golfer only needs flair, if they keep putting themselves in a position that needs a magician to get out of.Yeah, sorry, I was viewing it as a negative comment overall in conjunction with saying he had no flair, which I didn't think was true. Ballesteros had 'flair' because he would hit some awful shots in the first place and have to recover from them. I'm sure Scottie feels he can do without this type of flair by hitting good tee shots in the first place.![]()
If he did strut round the course giving it the “I’m the man” vibes he’d (possibly rightly) be thought of as arrogant. I’ll take the actual humble modest thoughtful and decent Scottie any day. It's funny that you portray this as a bad thing, because the ones who do show their emotion on the course - Hatton, Clark, Garcia - get absolutely slated for it as well. Portrush is a superb golf course and is tough enough I promise. The rough wasn't crazy and the wind never really got going. Any links with similar conditions would have seen better scoring than anticipated (Carnoustie included)A few good holes but looked pretty easy all in all. Maybe just me but I'd much rather see a level par score winning at a brutal carnoustie
Wasn't really that windy at all. Looking at previous Open wins, there seem to be quite a few won with very good scores. This particular one is probably compounded by the fact that Scheffler is one of the most outstanding golfers of a generation it seems, AND had a very good week for him.cant say i watched much though i did get a bit Friday and Sat afternoon. did it get windy? 17 under seems a low score for the open.
