The NEW Wentworth!!!

I don't see it myself, there has been quiet a few on for 2 but not after a wild drive. Put the ball where it should be and you have a shot to the green. Why shouldn't a hole penalise for being out of position from the tee?

Yes. It's 520 off the back (or something) and a straight 290 drive will kick on and leave less than 230 'cause it's a dog leg. Hit a good drive, and turning down (or not) 210-220 seems a good question to ask these players?

Westwoods comments were a load of guff, whinging that the public want to see birdies not sixes and sevens. I think most want to see a birdie earned with a great shot, not by just knocking a mid iron down the hill like you could do previously.

Dear Mr Westwood,

Yer havering. While I can only speak for myself, nothing gives me less pleasure in golf, than watching a load of 20 under or more scores in a tourney.

Golf is about birdies AND bogeys. Holes shouldn't be par/birdie chances, they should be a tough par for you guys, where a great shot gets rewarded, and a poor one will offer up a bogey chance.

Not a must stress, done in the stupid style of the US Open by simply making claggy rough greenside, but through tough approach shots and difficult run off areas if you miss.

Best Regards

Hugh Jars

Interesting that my comments were echoed by faces in the crowd today to the BBC, who said the same thing, they were loving the fact the pros were finding it as difficult as we do in the monthly medal.

The main question is whether the new design fits in with the style and character of the West Course. It doesn't - it looks more like a generic modern US Tour course with a hazard designed to excite the crowds.

Ditch the stream and replace it with a load of heather and stick a couple of bloody gorse bushes in there for good measure.
That will sort the men out from the boys and fit in with the idea that it is a heath and heather course.
;) ;)

An excellent suggestion.

I think the changes are too Americanised and love the TPC Wentworth quip - very apt.

The raised greens are out of character for the course too.

I agree that changes need to be made though. More length, heather and gorse would be great, and far better than Pete Dye style streams through the place!

As for parkland being pish - I assume you're joking!

It looked to me, by the expression on his face, that Fisher had pretty much made his mind up about the changes pre tournament.

He knew Wentworth inside out, but now he doesn't.

Luke Donald, on the other hand, found that it improved his chances.

So it's swings and roundabouts really.

Personally, I'd like to see a slightly wider entrance to the 18th green, or somewhere to allow a run off, just to make it a tougher decision for these guys. A tempter, if you will, just to tease a few more into trying a shot when it's still a bit borderline.

And also on the 17th, I think that putting that hollow on the left hand aproach to the green takes away any temptation to try to reach it with a long running shot.

I like holes where there is enough temptation for these guys to try to get there with a fairway wood, but there is genuine punishment if they fail.

I'm not saying drive and 7I, I'm saying drive and 5w. If they then go for it, and misjudge it, then make them pay.

Here!! Here!!

or shpuld that be

Hear! Hear!

'Hear! Hear!'. The expression comes from several hundred years ago when MPs shouted this phrase in agreement with something another was saying.

or perhaps 'Ear, Ear!'
when said in response to a Mr J Ceasar - an Italian gentleman immortalised by one W Shakespeare (or an F Bacon or others)

Until he played the 17th like a weekend hacker. Stupid boy had the title in the bag (and the Ryder cup points). All he had to do was take 3 shots to the green and two putt.

He is now in my book as "apprentice to Jean van der Velde".

Of the players that I watched on the 18th, they all laid up with their 2nd shots and then pitched on. This suggests it's a risk or reward hole surely? And believe me , there are plenty of run off areas for anything wayward, and then the deep deep bunkers will swallow anything other than on target
I suppose the true drama of the course doesn't come across as well on TV.

Golfmmad.
