How many of you hit a superb drive from the tee. Accept the appreciative compliments and comments from your partners. Walk confidently to your ball for your second shot, settle over the ball then knob the bloody thing around 50 yards, normally into trees, bushes, dense rough etc?

Did it the other day on the 17th hole. Drove majestically from the tee. Oozing confidence I then sh**ked my wedge shot for the green straight OOB into dense rough, never to be seen again. Absolutely ruined my card as I finished with an 8.

Did this yesterday. 8th hole, longish par 4. Smacked a lovely drive down the middle, left me a fairly straightforward shot in. I was between clubs. 8 iron or 9 iron. 8 iron or 9 iron?? Decided to go with the smaller club and give it a belt. Spun right off the ball and topped it about 25 yards. Knob

hehe we all do this, I have seen golfers of all standards doing it.

"great drive AL" and all that. I tend to say thanks and ask if I get a point for it in a glib way. What I am meaning is, driving is worth nothing, the last putt is the one I really want a "good putt Al" on.

A perfect drive is the kiss of death for me. First time out with my i15 (last week) I absolutely spanked one down our 370 yard, par 4, 15th hole. I ended up 40 yards short of the green only to thin it through and down a bank at the back of the green, I ended up with a double bogey. Also there was a similar one a few weeks previous which resulted in a triple :o

Happens all the time. Best recent example was at the 18th at Nairn when we were up for the Castle Stuart trip.

Lovely drive. Picked out my 5 wood which should have got up in 2 easily. Topped it so badly that the ball hit my foot on the way back down. Great end to a round.

Ouch!!

Yeah. Rule 19, Alex. If it hits you or your own equipment then it's a 1 stroke penalty. Safe to say it's more usually out of steeply faced bunkers or after rebounding from trees though.

A lesson for us all here:

Sunday I played with a guy who was paired with a scratch player and a one handicapper for the club championship. I asked him what the difference was between their game and the rest of us.

His answer was simple - from 100 yards in, they get up and down VERY well.

Whilst the rest of us are hitting nice drives and then oinking the second, they're hitting their approaches stone dead.
