The House of Lords

Michele Mone is a successful failed business person.

she allegedly treated her staff badly, some had offices bugged (public record), her business's made huge losses and the last few years trading with mjm etc was advised on a cash only basis.

Please dont bring the referendum into it, its not relevant.

She is a failed business women who looked good and was good at PR, fair play to her, we all have to make a living.

anyone watch her on celebrity the apprentice? it was embarrassing.

Her new role and the peerage is an insult though in my opinion

Pretty accurate summation of her business track record imo.

As for her peerage? Well, the doddering old buggers probably need a fresh injection of eye candy (arguably) for the benches. ;)

Shame this thread about a serious topic has descended into a fairly sexist attack on one of the new peers.

If you want to talk about undeserving awards, how about Douglas Hogg?

Or what about the undemocratic nature of the lords; how about the lib dems getting more new lords than they have MPs?

Or ukip (much as I hate them) not getting any despite polling 4 million or so votes in the general election?

Yes unfortunately a couple of sexist posts from the usual suspects.
Like you it annoys me and draws the attention away from the other unelected peers.

Perhaps that was Cameron's cunning plan.
Put a dodgy attention seeker up and all my retired/discarded colleagues will slip in under the radar.

utter nonsense. Why do you try and turn all posts into a sexist slant:confused:

I have a dislike of the Lords for a number of reasons. Undoubtedly one of them is the fact that titles are given to these people which somehow seem to elevate them in the eyes of others for no genuine reason. Time served civil servants, politicians of varying quality, political appointments. Are any of them worth of a title that brings about respect? Not from me I'm afraid. Alan Beith, previous MP for Berwick, is now a Lord. Utterly forgettable and pointless MP for 20 odd years is now walking around with people doffing caps to him and people expecting others to call him Lord Beith as though we should be grateful for his years as an MP.

Create a second chamber, 200 people max, ideally elect at least half of them, all on 10 yr terms, they can be removed by an ethics committee if necessary, no titles. I repeat, no titles. Call them MSC's, Member of Second Chamber. Let them do their jobs as scrutinisers of legislation.

What we have now is a nonsense, 800+ people are eligible.

I'd just like to point out there is a small handful of folk, in the house, that I consider more than worthy...
But as for the majority... No thanks...

In any large group there are some very good, some very bad and others somewhere inbetween. At the moment there are not enough in the former group although you are absolutely correct to point out that there are some good people in there. Unfortunately the whole system and set up is wrong so they do get tarred with the same brush.

Spot on, I am told that the the HoL now has about 40 more members than there are MEP's.
Why have we stood aside and let this happen?
Scandalous.
