Having heard mention of the grain of the green by commentators in the past I'd always dismissed it as nonsense to suggest it would have much effect on a putt. Well having just returned from Spain I can confirm it can have a huge effect. The greens were lightening fast and if your putt was down-grain all you had to do was touch it and it's 6 foot past the hole. The grain isn't something I'd noticed before so is it more prevalent in better climates or have I just not played a good enough course in this country?

It depends on the type of grass used.

Bent grass grows vertically so has no grain. Bermuda grass grows horizontally so has a grain which greatly affects the roll of the ball.

Bermuda is used mostly in hotter climates which is why we don't have to worry about a grain over here.

Thankyou Region3... I've learn't something today...

I had puzzled on this myself in the past... Just never got around to asking the question...
