Played the first round with my new MP-57's today.

Woke up fresh and was feeling ok. Made it to the club with plenty of time to spare before our tee time, so we got a bucket of 50 balls and hit 25 each to loosen up.

Was striking the ball OK and felt good, even my drives were accurate.

Bit of a putting warm up and off we went.

To cut a long story short, I played very well. Driving was good, short game was surprisingly good, I was hitting my new irons sweetly and everything was marvellous. Managed to go a VERY LARGE personal best 2 over through 9 holes with 7 pars and 2 bogeys. Needless to say, I was ecstatic.

What followed was quite possibly the most dramatic fall from grace ever! I managed to shoot 14 over on the back 9 with 1 par (on the hardest hole on the course) and a whole load of blobs.

I hate this game.

But I suppose I need to look at the positives: My new irons are awesome and I shot two over par (and was par through 5 holes).

Will be heading to the range tomorrow to try and find some consistency!

I had a similar round at Whittington Heath yesterday, 1 over on the front 9, 11 over on the back. Oh well, just shows that what we're searching for is there somewhere, but it only shows it's face for 9 holes.
Glad the new irons are going well though.

I did say any early form would wear off although even I didn't expect flat batteries after just nine holes. At least you know they can work for you so it's all about finding some consistancy with them and maybe re-learning how far you hit each club

Yep, exactly. I'm not disheartened at all, just annoyed that it can go from one extreme to the other so quickly!

Kell - I didn't count my score but I knew I was 2 over. Usually this is bad, but I stepped up and launched my drive on the 10th, pitched in with a 9 iron which got a nice kick on the left hand side of the green and rolled 20ft from the hole. I 3 putted but was happy to take a 5 as my 2nd really shouldn't have ended up where it did.

After that other than the par I was just too inconsistent.

Richy - I had 3 wedges in the bag as I still have my old clubs, so I used the 54 out of that set. But I pretty much use my PW around the green unless I need to bring the lob into play. So I wasn't restricted at all.

Did you count your score at the turn? I NEVER do anymore. It can only lead to disappointment or add pressure.

Never understood this concept. How can you Not know you're score? Whenever I play golf what I'm trying to do is shoot the lowest gross score possible. If I'm 3 over after 15 holes, I'm gonna know. If I'm 10 over after 9, I'm gonna know. It's basic maths working out how far over par you are after each hole and I don't understand how people can say they don't know their score

I agree, and I actually WANT to know my score. If that puts me under a bit of pressure then that is a GOOD thing in my mind. Playing well when you need to is the key to this stupid game! (so I hear)

I'd much rather stand on the 18th knowing that a birdie will see me shooting a personal best than taking a bog-standard par and missing out.
