Just a question & i know hindsight is a blessing so be fair in ye'r answers

Before the transfer.. did any of ye rate carroll when he was a Newcastle player ??

Lets forget the £35mill.. he had no imput into that & it was because Newcastle knew Liverpool had cash & were desperate for a centre forward

Here goes, I was up in Newcastle on business, seeing some customers the day he signed. We already had Suarez and I had already heard six months before that Torres wanted out, and wanted to join Benayoun at Chelsea, on good authority.

Like a lot of LFC fans, I remember a few weeks previously Carroll having an absolute barnstormer against us, winning every header, looked reasonably mobile and most importantly had a 1 in 2 scoring record in the prem (albeit only for 4-5 months). He had also broken into the England set up, and was also still very young.

I was made up the day we signed him, once it was confirmed that Torres wanted out (who was also still slightly on the wane, bad body language, moaning to refs all the time etc). We also bagged 15 million on top.

I thought 35 mill was high, but so was 50 mil for Torres, fair prices would have been 20 mill/35 mill, but the last day transfer can come at a premium (Chelsea paid that premium).

There you go.

In the summer before the January transfer, Andy Carroll was being linked with Chelsea for £5M. Even at that price a lot of the Chelsea fans wanted no part of it.

im sure if i dug back enough on my fb i could find my old status's about when we signed carrol. I always have said he was a proven goal scorer in the championship but never in the prem as he only had 6 months at this level. I agree he is good at "what he does" BUT that isnt the right type of football that is played at anfield. He's more of a duncan ferguson than an ian rush. Like many have said he would do alot better at the right club, By no means am i saying hes not a big club player im just saying he isnt the right style of player for LFC. His 1st touch is below standard and to be fair weve never been a long ball style to a big centre forward team.
We brought him when he was injured which we also did with aquilanni and see how that turned out! The 35mil is the main thing i never agreed over andy carrol he isnt worth anywhere near that but mike ashley rubbed his grubby little mits together when we came knocking due to knowing we had a bit of cash floating about

This is what i was trying to figure , how does a good player go bad or worse .. is he wrong for the club or is the club wrong for him .. ? If your club spend big on a centre forward that is proven at a certain style of play does the team change to suit that player or do you expect the player to change .. if the player changes & he doesnt cut the mustard surely the club should shoulder most of the blame .
the other side of the coin then would liverpool club & fans want to become a team that plays that way , (long ball to big man etc) i dont think pool will ever resort to that style of play.. i know they had crouch but he didnt [IMO] set the world alight.. they are a ball playing team & always will be id say .

Totally agree, the player should be bought in mind to fit the system (passing game), if he has extra qualities then great, but he should be always capable of passing and controlling a football, unless they are a good scorer (Aldridge) and to a lesser extent Kuyt. Although for the last 15 years going back to Evans, we seem to buy players and try to convert them into something else.

I can only recall Paisley doing this once or twice (Ray Kennedy and Emlyn Hughes), but we seem to try it every 3-4 signings now.
