I have been putting together some decent scores recently but today was the change from much shorter winter tees straight back onto the whites for a medal. Forgot how different the course plays when you add the extra yards and how much harder it is playing long irons into greens that I have been hitting wedges or short irons at for the last 5 months. Score went up from recent averages in the low 80s to a 96.

Still, nice to be back on proper tees and greens that are starting to get some pace back.

Luckily for me, both my old and new course play full length all year round so I don't have to adjust. It's easy to forget how much difference it can make isn't it.

Since I joined Royal Ascot I've been forced to hit a lot of long irons because of the Par 3s and reaching some of the Par 4s. This was always a weakness in my game but I've really improved in that area recently and yesterday I hit 4 iron onto two greens from 190ish which is a real breakthrough for me. If we'd been on a shorter course for the last few months I'd be struggling off the back tees.

You need to learn to hit the ball further. Increase your clubhead speed.

Christ, watch out,.......he's around again ! I just love his advice, all from someone who has never, (up to a couple of weeks ago at least,) - had never even played on a full course !!

GB - you need one of the swingometer thingys.......so you can get practising hittin it further !!

Thankfully my course has been on or very near to normal Tees for ages, and normal greens which have been fast, - no White's as yet, but wont be long .
It does make a difference though doesnt it.

Not a great deal of difference on most holes at my 9-hole home course. It's the last week for our Winter League a I put in a decent round this week for 22 points playing 4 under handicap.

I expect the Pro will be giving me a cut! :-)

The annoying thing is, put him on the middle of a fairway, let's call it the 7th, and he hits it straight left into a hazard

Actually watching him hit some of his long irons yesterday was really pleasing and he's not going to be off 12 for much longer. Shame he had a mug like me for a partner although at the end of the day the winning score would have required something akin to a career day off 3/4 handicap

HaHa - the very same 4i :D I actually stepped off that shot once because the 1st time I started my takeaway the club snagged in the grass behind and put me off. We were playing winter rules but I'd already taken my preferred lie so couldn't do so again. All I could think about before the shot was it snagging again so I lifted the club quicker than I normally would and must have swung with my arms rather than rotated with my body and turned it over. I was absolutely gutted. I'd started with 5 straight pars and hit a great 6i to 10 ft on 6 before 3 putting. My tee shot on 7 was perfect and then that horror. Oh well.

Sounds like your fairways need a cut. ;)

It does doesn't it. I'm really not sure what happened. Clearly it looked like a decent lie otherwise I wouldn't have placed it there but it snagged on something. I was on the downslope of a small dip so maybe that was it I don't know. Chances are it was a one off but when something gets in your head like that it's hard to get out.

Back on the normal tees for our club this weekend also. Plays longer but not sure it is any harder. The winter tees all come with ther own problems - trees in play that are not in front of the normal tees, 185 yard carry over a pond with 40 yard landing area, a couple of the temps are set back also so a par three plays 185 yards (with a tree that you have to keep under also) insead of the normal 155 yards.

With the winter fairways holding the ball up I reckon the two are similar in terms of difficulty.

Different though.... I put my first tee shot OOB (starting on the 10th) which is almost impossible from the temp - lol.

44 points last week - 38 this week. First medal next weekend.
