The challenges facing England football...

It's worse than that. From the guardian...

2,769 English coaches holding Uefa's B, A and Pro badges, its top qualifications. Spain has produced 23,995, Italy 29,420, Germany 34,970 and France 17,588

Well there you go. In the continent they use top qualified coaches to train young grassroots players over here they are predominantly in the professional game

People say that Ramsay, Winterbotham, Robson and Venables were England's most successful managers but they were not.
As records go, long ball specialist Graham Taylor was England's most successful manager. We all know what happened to him.

Right then here is my 10 pence worth. Basically we are our worst enemies. It is alright having the best league in the world but it is full to the brim with top quality foreign players who make the few home grown players perform to their best. When we have to pick a national squad the best players in the Premiership aren't eligible so who we have to pick from are incapable of producing quality football. Our strikers do not get quality balls they are used to week in week out.
Defenders are capable enough but the midfield and wide players are frankly dire. We cannot think because the thinkers are not in the squad, they are playing for all the other teams. It is time to sacrifice the Premiership and cap the number of foreign players, this will lead to more homegrown talent until then we will always struggle on the international stage.

Well said Drawboy.
The EPL will end in tears.
When China start buying up the worlds top players Sky will soon shift the cameras.

The top players won't go to China until the end of their careers, careers they will have forged in Europe. Drawboy I agree with what you are saying but it is not the Premier League's responsibility to look after grassroots football development, it is the FAs. Until that body is made fit for purpose instead of being and old boys blazer network any change will take place at an incredibly slow pace.

There are people at the top of the game that still believe we gave the world football and should therefore not look to them for any lessons on how we could do it better.

It is a sorry state of affairs but I for one don't believe you can blame the Premier League clubs. Look at Wenger. His entire club is built around bringing in young talent and developing them. It's not about their nationality it is about their ability and sadly the talent is all from foreign shores right now...

I'm not suggesting it is the Premier leagues responsibility to develop grass roots football but it has to take a large share of the blame. English football is more than capable of producing quality players who however will never get the chance to play at the very top level because the top teams will always look to the continent for it's talent. Football fans in this country demand the best and do not want to wait for England to develop talent therefore our clubs would rather buy a ready made product. Italy, Spain,Germany do not fill up their domestic leagues with foreign players to the same extent, therefore they can pick from a wealth of talent at all positions. I do not think I'm far out saying Italy's last World Cup squad had no players in that played outside of Italy although I am prepared to be corrected. I believe all of us could have picked Roy Hodgesons likely team. That shows just how much top level talent is available to any England manager, frankly not much. I firmly believe that a cap on foreign players is the only way to make our international squad stronger.

A cap will never happen unless it's Europe wide because of the Champions League. That said the 25 player rule goes some way toward encouraging bringing domestic youth through.

Clubs buy abroad because British talent is overpriced and foreign youngsters are technically more gifted. We need to produce more Oxlade-Chamberlains, Nick Powell and Jack Wilsheres

We are a decade behind the structuring in places like Germany, Spain and Italy where the juniors are nutured and taght proper skills at an early age. We are still reliant on 11 a side games from U9 onwards but elsewhere its 5v5 7v7 etc and these small sidedgames o smaller piches demand better first touch, passing and movement.

I think we do have some good talent coming through but Hodgson needs time to build his own side, building for the WC qualifiers etc.We aren't god enough to win a major tournament and the sooner the pres and the FA realise this then the less pressure we put on the players and they can play with freedom and perhaps realise their true potential

We also have a massive problem with the tabloid press that make average players into Gods on the strength of one good game or goal. They then line up to knock these Gods off the very pedestal they put them on. We all get behind the team to such an extent that we put too much pressure on them to perform.
Put your flags out, put them on your cars but lets stop expecting what is in the reality of world football a second division team to come home with the trophy. We are so far away from that and in reality have been since 1966. National pride Hey! I'm all for it but it really is time to get real and drop the expectations by a large margin.

Irony is everyone did. A large proportion of people thought we'd struggle to get out of the group. We not only do that but we win the group and get knocked out on penalties and people start lambasting the manager and players!!!!!!!
