The best shot you've ever hit??

Playing at Hilton Park many years ago. Can't remember which hole but it's a shortish dog leg right with the green below the level of the fairway and a nasty gorge along the right.

Anyway, after a decent drive in the middle of the fairway I hit a nine iron over the gorge, landed it exactly where I hoped it would gather towards the hole and got a perfect view of it rolling down and into the hole for an eagle (probably my first come to think of it).

Best part was I was still in my teens and playing with my dad - not sure which of us was prouder!

Been a good few over the years but recently hit a great 3 wood second shot on the 6th at Crieff GC, was about 235y to clear the bunkers with the flag tucked in behind them, caught it perfect and ended up 10ft away, missed the eagle but easy birdie.

Mine was at Forest of Arden on the 9th.
Uphill par 4 dogleg to the right.
I'd hit a good drive up the middle and had just over 200 uphill to the green.
Took out my 3 iron and just hit as clean a shot as I've ever hit with anything. Couldn't have made a better contact.
The ball flew up to the green, pitched once and stopped 10 feet from the flag.
Missed the putt of course............

probably the most memorable would be a 240yd hybrid to a par 5 at eccleston park in a national knock out comp and nailing it to 3 inch for a tap in eagle,i won the comp by 1 shot and played in the final at st mellion were i came second ( duffed a chip on the 16th) gutted as the winner had an all expenses paid holiday to dubai

In a junior comp at Coulsdon Court I had a three iron 2nd shot to the par 5 5th. (That's an old Petron Impala blade 3I )

Hit it lovely to within a foot and a half, for a simple eagle putt.

Missed it.

Lost the comp on countback.

Must be something about those clubs and that place. Had my first ever eagle there playing with my dad. Holed a petron impala 7 iron from about 100 yards. (well I was 11 - at least a 6 iron that far these days)

My best shot would probably be recovery shots, only a few weeks ago i was a few inches from going into a burn so a tricky stance coupled with a large stick right in front of my ball, so i hit a lovely wedge right through the stick to send the ball towards the hole.

Most of my best shots are recovery shots out of trees. Big hooks or slices, but one shot from the middle of the fairway I do remember was at at 14th on the Old Course last year. Hit a nice drive down the middle and the ball finished on the upslope on one of the mounds. Had hell bunker to carry, and with the lie being so perfect hit a driver. It soared over the bunker and run up twenty yards short of the green. Three shots later and a solid par on what can be one of the hardest holes in golf. Oh yes I lost the hole to a 5 net 4.:(

Toss up between:

A cross green putt for par in a club match that left our opponents baffled as we played the first 4 holes BB in two under gross. Won the match 5&4.

A 374 yard drive (confirmed by two readings, one laser, one GPS) downhill, downwind.

A 220 yard 3 hybrid to 3 feet for a birdie, downhill

A 55 yard sand wedge pitch in

Playing in a match last year against another local club and we were 6 down on the 11th tee hit an ok (ish) drive tried to smash a 2 iron and topped it about 30 yards :o decided sod it and pulled out the three wood, big raking hook to about 3 feet and the first win oin the comeback. We won the match on the last after being 4 down with 5 to go. THe other pair said it was that 3 wood which got to them the most :whoo:

Shot one today I was very happy with. Short par 4, on the card it read 274' but I think it's shorter. Very tight off the tee, over a huge gulley, then curves back slightly downhill round left past some woods. Hit a sweet 3wood off the tee with perfect draw and got a great roll on the fairway and ended up on the fringe, to set up a 2 putt birdie. Was pretty chuffed with that!

My Best Shots Ever - top 3

1. 16th at my home course, par 4 475yds SI 1. 2007. Smashed driver down middle into the wind. Left with 200 to go. Green sits on ledge with ground sloping severe left to right if missed so the safe approach is run it in from the left hand side, hope for 2 putts and walk away happy. Discussion with my Dad/caddie regarding shot goes along lines of safe approach. We agree on 4 iron and Dad’s last words are ‘Remember - aim left and run it in’. I take aim and swing and as soon as I hit it I say ‘or I could just hit it straight at the flag’ and it lands 5ft away and stops dead. Finish birdie-par–par to win comp and get my name on the club noticeboard forever!

2. 1st at Royal Lytham and St Annes. Aged 16, (25 years ago now), on first ever golfing trip away with my Dad. There’s a new concept to me of a Starter on the tee and he’s looking at me like maybe I am not worthy or should be at school. Stays to watch me tee off – pressure’s on. 5 iron to 10ft and make birdie! My Dad’s never been prouder and thoroughly enjoyed the surprised look on the Starter’s face as my ball sailed towards the pin.

3. 18th at St Andrews. Aged 17. Pulled tee shot down 1st fairway. Wait for those on 1st tee to play then walk over. Look at shot I have left with suddenly no idea what club to hit. No yardages and I have a problem with the dead ground of the valley of sin as I am also known to send balls flying over greens ‘still raising as they go over the flag’. I now noticed my Mum and several tourists leaning against the back fence watching. My Dad’s too far away to ask ‘Is an 8 going to be OK?’ without shouting it and looking like an idiot. 8 iron selected and struck perfectly but I still remember the feeling of all my internal organs dropping as I watched the ball and wondered whether I would have to shout ‘FORE’ and send the assembled masses scrambling for cover. Relief as the ball lands between flag and back fence and finishes 15ft away. Even a couple of claps, (and not just from my Mum), as I walk to the green alongside my Dad. Left the birdie putt on the lip but that was fine by me.

and maybe another thread for this but here's my most memorable bad shot...

The 18th at Carnoustie 2008. Doing the ‘Van de Velde’ challenge as you do. 6 to win the Open.
Driver selected of course and away it goes – a massive pull hook left OOB. Hits the tarmac in the car park of the bowls club on that side, (how it missed the cars I’ll never know), and launches itself even higher and further left. Next bounce is now on the road going alongside the course, (nothing coming and no pedestrians), and it just keeps going. Still bouncing as it disappears out of sight down the road – probably ended up on the railway line! Family joke is that it’s still going all the way to Aberdeen! Bagged a 7 and sat with a beer pleading for us to sneak out just play the 18th again – I’ll par it next time!

Highwoods, 8th hole, a nice 385 yard par 4, dead straight and flat, but the green is elevated, and a stream runs across the fairway about 50 yards short of it.
I'd carved my drive out to the right and was sitting under a row of trees that line that side of the fairway. I had a reasonable lie but my swing was restricted by the overhanging branches, and I had to keep the ball low to stay under the remaining trees that were in front of me.
I had about 150 to go, pulled out a 4 iron and practiced what I was trying to achieve a good half a dozen times before settling over the ball.
The minute I struck it, I knew I had got it right. The ball fizzed out from under the trees, cleared the stream and kicked into the bank that guarded the green. Kicked up and stopped no more than a foot from the hole. The guy that I was playing with couldn't believe that I had pulled it off, and gave me the putt for the winning birdie. To top that, I also birdie the next par 4 by canning an outrageous 40 foot putt from off the green to go two up in what had been a really tight match! He didn't recover from it and I went on to win 4&3.
