A brief summary to-date.
I started playing in July 2011, before that I only played a very occasional round of pitch & putt.
I had 6x lessons with a pro in July & August 2011.
My first rounds on the par 70 course were around the 125 mark.
I stopped playing the course until I could at least hit the ball straight.(ish)
I started playing the course again later that year where my scores were hovering around or just over 100.

2012
I entered my first medal in April 2012, I shouldn't have because I was still awful & I just wasn't ready for Medal play.
I continued to practice hard & my scores half way through last year were consistently in the mid-nineties.
I started playing Medals again half way through last year & started to enjoy them.
By the end of 2012, I was shooting consistently in the low nineties.

2013
At the very end of last year & the beginning of this year, it really started to come together.
Less duffed shots, more consistent scoring & crucially I started to feel comfortable with my swing.
My scores started dropping to around 90 or just below, with a best of 88 a couple of weeks ago.
Today, I played in the roll-up, what a round I had!!! I played some lovely controlled golf, never put myself in any horrible positions & shot a gross score of 80 :D
I am over the moon with how I played today, I know I will still have bad days & bad rounds, that's the nature of the game, but I do feel that all the hours spent grafting away practicing are now bearing fruit.

So, if you are a high handicapper like me, keep at it, you will come good in the end.
Now hurry up Spring, let's get the Medals going. :D

Congrats Sir, now its time to shoot a round in the 70s :). Actually that may be a way away, hopefully not but time to get that hcap down from 22!!!!!!!

Well played Captain, it's a great feeling when it all comes good like that isn't it. Try not to get too ahead of yourself but take great confidence from today.

awesome golf. I remember when I hit an 85, wasnt out of this world golf but steady. I was not happy after as I lipped a few putts and had a penalty drop aswell. Havent had a sub 90 since :p

Good golf mate. I'm nearly at the same level at yourself but finding it hard to get from low 90s into the 80s, although i have shot a personal best of 89 twice.

The thing is tho i know i can play much better, as i usually have about 5 or 6 duff shots and miss a couple of easy putts. Just need to cut out the daft mistakes and i'll be sorted.

Whats it like playing in medals? I'm hoping to play in some this year. I usually up my game when playing with better players, but the pressure might be too much for me when playing for something.

Great score Cap'n - well done! Keep practising hard and roll with the punches that are sure to come. But savour the moment for now as that's a special score for a 22 handicap.

That is some improvement right there. Well done!!

I'm on a not too dis-similar situation to you.

Started in 2010. Broke 100 pretty quick and made steady progress from there.

Today's I shot 77. It's the third time in 4 rounds I've broken 80 having not broken 80 for a good few months.

I don't feel like I'm doing anything in my swing different. Perhaps I've just settled and accepted my limitations.

I don't care so long as it continues

I'm hoping / thinking this might be a good year for me too. My handicap dropped in a very short space of time from 28 to 22 but has been stuck there for about 18 months now. 3 cards entered in our 9 hole Stableford competition so far 19,16 and 18 points.

18 today over 9 holes with a 4 pointer on the last hole. 3 x 3 putts in the first 5 holes too which saw me drop 3 points where I'd normally take all three. Putting came good towards the end of the 9. Perhaps I should warm up a bit instead of hitting the first tee straight from the car!!

Well played and keep going, it will translate to medal rounds soon. It sounds like you practice a lot and are dedicated enough to shoot that score regularly given time.
