i have read and been told to learn to have a 75% swing to base my game on . does this also apply to my driver ? and also how do i gauge this is it in length/or position of back swing ?

I never make a full swing with my driver. My pro says that a man of my build/strength (polite way to say a fat git) generates enough power in a short swing to hit it long and this seems to be the case.

It is the same with my fairways.

With my irons however I always make a full swing when practicing although I do have the 75% shot in my locker.

It is a useful shot to have, for example in a fierce wind I would rather hit a 75% 5I and keep the ball low than a 100% 7I to 150 yards.

Starting with a short swing is a good way to learn for sure. It helps you establish a consistent swing plane and finish with a lot of control. You can then build up to a full swing and wrist cock as you progress.

Reduced swing is a surefire way of ensuring accuracy.
We've all done it on the course or down the range - step up with the driver and give it the big yahoo, result - a frighteningly wayward shot.

As a beginer myself I was told by several to reduce my swing to give more accuracy. I also found that a 75% swing gave me more distance when compared to a full ripper. I found my shortened swing enabled me to swing more slowly and precisely. When I was letting rip with a full whacker my swing plane, body turn and arms were al over the place, purely because I was trying to hit the ball too hard.

I try to hit everything 75-80 but the temptation to lash at the driver after hitting it well for the first few holes is my bugbear.
When I try to push my irons further than usual I start pushing an pulling them, so tens to stick to the plan even when playing badly.

Agree, never swing yourself off your feet, swing smoothly with a nice tempo and your swing will become more repeatable and you will hit the ball more consistently.

Watch the pro's hit their irons. They make only a 3/4 swing yet they absolutely nail them.

Go up the range and work on 1/2 and 3/4 swings with an 8 iron. Before too long your 3/4 swing will go as far as your full swing did, but with much more accuracy.

100% spot on, I used to go parallel on all irons bar the sw, now I get to 3/4, we need to get a video clip section I think for helping each other.
