Can I ask why you are thinking of a 1-iron. A hybrid of some description would make more sense IMHO

I am also thinking of getting a 1 iron. Looked on iron finder and ebay but no luck on a Mizuno MP33 thus far. If anyone can source one that would be ace!

Not sure many sets come with a 1 iron option even as an additional option. Not sure what merit you'd get as they are very hard to hit (well in my hands) but each to their own. I would say ebay or older models will be your best bet

I would like one just to mess around with. it would be ideal when the grass was as baked as it was last week.

I played a few holes with a chap a few nights ago. he has a bag of mizuno tp-11 irons. he had a tp-11 1 iron there. I couldn't resist asking him for a go with it. I hit two shots with it off the tee. one I tried to play my usual slingy hook. I didn't catch it well at all.
I then re-loaded and attempted to play a slight cut. I caught it sweet as a nutt and the ball took off on a nice low trajectory and ran a great deal on the dry turf!

it didn't go any further than a typical hybrid but I have to admit it was a lot of fun.

I may be getting one soon just to have a mess with. I cant really see it making the bag but who knows.

yep

I used the Ping Eye for many, many years, and still remember hitting 2 off them into the 9th at Wentworth to 6", but there are much easier ways to play the game now.

The 3h can do everything that it can, plus a bit more in reality.

I also have a Wilson Staff 2 iron in my old fluid feel set, which is arguably more powerful in terms of it's ability to hit a penetrating shot, but your margin for error is tiny (the clubhead is much smaller than a ball!) and again a 3h can deliver.

“If you are caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron.”

Ignore all the nay sayers mate, if you really want to give one a go then buy a cheap one of eBay and see how you get on!

I've got a couple.

A T-Zoid Pro w Rifle 5.5 and a Burner w TS-100.

Occasionally used for ball-striking practice!

I did use a TM-300 2-iron for a while - which flew lower than the T-Zoid.

Hybrids are the way to go these days though. Why make the game harder than it needs to be?

Either available for a tenner plus postage if you really want!

@Duncan. Quite a sensible way to play that hole - even now (with a hybrid!).

I will never ever get a hybrid. Todd Hamilton used one to win the Open when he beat Ernie in a play off. Since then I vowed never to put one n my bag. Geoff Ogilvy wrote an good article on how he believes poorer players are doing better because they don't have to have the skill to hit long shots into greens. Luckily I use my bladed 2 iron very well and think that I could use the 1 iron when needed.

PS - I also don't like Ernie using a belly putter to win his Open last year and won't be getting one either. Glad the ban is coming in

When I first started playing, a lot of Pros used a one iron, and I even had a two iron. Now with the stronger lofts a new one iron would be only any good for buttering your toast.

I trust you realise Ernie had been using Rescues for years before that and was possibly the Pro that legitimised them for many - including me.

I actually used a Sonartec MD like Hamilton's pair (very successfully for a few years) and was happy to do so partly because of Hamilton's win. Though once I found the right shaft (Fuji 904HB), I was also happy to use a TM Rescue like Ernie did.

I hope your driver is still from the 1970's then, and you don't have any graphite shafts in anything!

I'd recommend getting a 1 iron as it will be one less person to beat if we end up in the same competition.

There seems to be an recurring strapline that keeps cropping up on the forum......

Struggle to break 80?? Use stuff that make the game even harder.

Why? Is it bar kudos?

"How did you get on?"

5 over h'caps, BUT, I am using blades, a 1iron and I've got xxx stiff shafts

You legend
