I trust you realise Ernie had been using Rescues for years before that and was possibly the Pro that legitimised them for many - including me.

I actually used a Sonartec MD like Hamilton's pair (very successfully for a few years) and was happy to do so partly because of Hamilton's win. Though once I found the right shaft (Fuji 904HB), I was also happy to use a TM Rescue like Ernie did.

It really bugged me when he used it around the greens. I was really gutted when Ernie lost to him. It's just one of those things for me.

Yup, the number means very little, a modern 3 iron has similar loft and launches the ball higher.

I suggest the mizuno long iron replacements, very good as a tee club I bet!

I have only 1 hybrid, 19* 2h in my set and it fits perfectly, if I need to hit it lower I have a 21* 3 iron that is shorter and lower but opens up my options massively off the tee. I rarely hit it off the deck but last time I did I got an eagle!

I doubt you will get a new set with a 1 iron, most sets don't even have a 3 iron anyore. The last Mizuno line to have a 2 iron option must be at least 6 years ago.

From ready a recent article on lofts i think the last major Mr Faldo won his 2 iron loft was 21 deg so i imag a 1 iron back then was 18?

Mizuno do long iron replacemants and i think there was talk of Titeist doing some as well, or ther is evil bay

Fli-Hi from Mizuno (name gives a hint about flight) has been around for a while

Titleist 712-U (presumably 713-U this year) and Callaway X Utility are quite recent - at least to Retail.

I use my hybrid around the greens if I have a dodgy lie that I'm not happy chipping from, it's a cracking shot to have in your repertoire once you've mastered it.

I have certainly used the 'Rescue Putt' in the past and my 17* MD was ideal for it - with its virtually square face. I use the 4-hybrid these days, but am committing more to 'proper' chipping.

I don't see the use of a 'magic club' as Allis described it as anything to get bugged about. At RSG, Ben Curtis asked his (local) caddie how to play the sort of shots Hamilton used his, and was shown a shot with an 8-iron. He used that club, rather effectively, all week! I've seen Tiger use a 3-wood when on the fringe up against the rough and Westwood has sunk Rescue/3-Wood putts from the fringe. Driver off the deck is a legitimate shot too.You have 14 clubs to use how you wish! I just missed an Eagle 'putt' on The Old Course actually with the putter as it was the best option from where I lay!

Think its Jason Day that has been trialling a 1 iron lately, read that they used his 2 iron and changed the loft.

A 2 iron is about as brave as I get.

An older chap at my club had a bag full of "old" ping irons (...... Zing, I think) and he has a 1-SW set and a driver.

As has been said, more modern sets seem to stop at the 4 iron, sometimes the 5 iron. I know the MP63's only go as low as a 3 iron.

i have a callaway razr x forged 3 irons that's been delofted to a 2 iron. no trouble hitting it, and use it for 9 tee shots at my course
