I'm getting so sick and tired of playing competitions at the minute! I've just crept up to 9.5 and its killed me! Arrgghh!

Its annoying because I'm playing 3/4 of the round to good low single standard - Then randomly have three **** holes! Could be anywhere on the course at any time! Its tiring now so I've decided to give up on the comps for 2/3 weeks and just focus on practice/practice/practice so hitting the field, putting green, chipping green and a few holes here n there

Take my last 2 scores -
84 - I had 3 double bogeys (6,17,18) - that's six shots! in three holes! so I was 8 over for the other 15.
87 - I had a quad, triple, triple and double bogeys (1,2,11,14) - so for the other 14 holes I was only 4 over!

Its annoying - and its not any holes in particular either - random ones! So annoying because I have a good all round game to be honest - just randomly blow up!

has anyone experienced this? what have you done to get over it?

Do you count as you go? If so that is probably putting pressure on you which is causing these.

Perfect example from yesterday, played a comp on a course I have never played before. Had a few bad holes but a few good ones. I had no idea what my score was but though I was out of it, buffer at best. After 15 holes I found myself counting my score and I only needed to par the last 3 to get a cut. And if SS goes down who knows. And with the course being hard I could even win this comp. Weather's not be kind either so can't see much more than 38/39 points, who knows, maybe my 36 points will win. I could actually throw in a birdie or 2. That's 38 points. And a 0.6 cut minimum. Standard scratch will probably go up 2. That's a full shot cut. I wonder what the trophy's like......

Yip, finished double, bogey, bogey.

I don't know why I spend the whole round ignoring my score and decide to check with a few to go.

I had a diabolical year last year and got to the stage that when I had a card in my hand I just was destined to blow up somewhere, and like you it could be anywhere. 14-15 good holes and 3-4 abominations.

I ended up getting a shot given back to me with the handicap review in January which hurt in particular, but twelve .1s in twelve comps said it all.

I have had something of a better start to the season with two comps so far where I hit the buffer once and missed it by a shot on the other.

I pulled the plug on comps last August but don't really believe it helped. I think you have to soldier on and wait for things to pick up. Still a bit windy with a card in hand and I have yet to be properly tested over the last tree with a score going, but I have made my mind up to duck nothing this year and feel that I can get that shot back plus even another one or two.

lol last 2 comps have been 81 with 3 trebles and 80 with 5 doubles. Currently king of turning a bad swing into a big number whilst seemingly playing well otherwise!

dont worry about your handicap, keep playing comps just dont heap the pressure on yourself

Bah, just play through it man dear, Ive been throwing in a few birdies in my rounds all year so far and yet going up (I dont mind a handful of bogeys but the doubles are killing me) .1 practically weekly. It'll come good so stick at it, maybe look at where its all going wrong, is it course management, poor tee shots, approaches etc?

Sympathise to a degree, but a handicap is there for a reason. Essentially it should be an aspirational figure rather than what you expect to shoot every week. Look at your Medal table after every event. At best you'll get 10% of the field shooting Net Par or better. The rest will be just over down to the guys who are hacking there way round.

Sounds to me as though you're just above buffering in most Medals. Stick with it as one good round (without the major errors) will kick you back into comp mode & you'll be flying.

Remember, golf is hard.

I'd go and play elsewhere for a couple of rounds at other courses, a change of scenery may help instead of no golf.

Best of luck though.

Personally I don't play a comp every week anyway, that would be a bit much for me. I tend to do one or two a month, then on the other weeks just play friendly rounds with mates at other courses and so on. I wouldn't want to do comps all the time, I feel like I'd be beating myself constantly. It's nice to have a more relaxing round every other week and then go back to the comps next time.

The fact that it happened in comps is overrated.

Just go and play golf. IF you play badly, you will play badly whether it's a comp or a freewheel with your mates.

Sounds very similar to my cards but I keep playing in all the comps I can, I have buffered or been cut in most comps this season. I wish I knew how to eliminate the rubbish holes, and when I figure it out I am going to shoot the lights out. Hopefully this season!

Agree with what Jamie said, you've clearly got the ability to shoot below your handicap. Sounds to me like you should look more at the mental side of things.

Take a look at some Bob rotella books for example, I accept that they are a little repetitive but I think it helps reinforce the points he makes.

The things he mentions sound very simple but because of their simplicity they can be hard to put into practice for 18 holes. If you do manage it you'll be back in the 70's in no time.

Throwing several car crash holes to mar a potential buffer or better is an art form I've perfected. It's driving me nuts but I won't stop playing. I go out and believe every round is "the one" to get a cut. I'll try until the 18th but if I have a mare then have a beer, collect 0.1 on the way out and try again next time
