Although I play in as many competitions as I can, and have loved team matches in other sports, for some reason putting my name down for our club's team games was never something that appealed to me.

A while ago however, I had a phone call asking me to play because they were short of a few players, and not wanting to let anybody down I agreed.

I'm so glad I did. I've played 4 matches now (season's finished) and thoroughly enjoyed all of them.

The only downside (to me) is that you don't get the excitement of seeing the match unfold with scores like you would at a pool match for example, because you're so separated from everyone else when you're playing, but that's it.

Also a great way to play other courses cheaply

Sometimes on here we get people not wanting to enter comps because they don't feel they're good enough then love it when they do.
I'd give the same advice to anyone regarding club matches. Get yourself stuck in, you'll love it! :)

I love team golf, played for both the scratch team and pairs handicap team at my last club.
Strokeplay has a habit of demoralising us at times, especially if you play good golf for 15 or 16 holes, then have 2 or 3 holes destroy your card, but in matchplay its less destructive.
Have some fond memories from team golf, and its something i'd like to have a go at again in the future, providing my games up to it.

I started playing team golf as well this year and love it. I am only in the social team as it is the only team without a handicap restriction that plays at weekends. Have met loads of people and played other courses for a tenner including food. I would certainly recommend anyone giving it a try.

I have been asked many times this year,i would love to play.
However giving up all my saturday is something i cant commit to.
I agree if you have the time and can commit,go for it.
Its also a great way of getting to know other members, and playing other courses on the cheap[as said].

I tend to play a lot of the club friendly matches (not deemed worthy of a spot on the clubs competition teams). These are great fun. All are 4bbb and while everyone is trying flat out to win, at the end of it the result isn't always the important part. I've been fortunate enough to have played a good number over the years and so far my record reads P17 W13 L1 H3. I rarely have the same partner every match as the club tries to give anyone who puts their name down a chance to play although if you play the home game you do get first dibs at the away tie so get to play some great courses free.

Played in some of ours this year, most fun I have had with my trousers on! Won all my matches and probably played my best golf in them too!

Unfortunately, despite one's golfing ability, our club team is out of reach to most.

You have to be part of a certain clique, if you know what I mean...

Know exactly what you are saying. There is something called the Hillman Trophy in the BBO or the Hillman Plate if you go out in the 1st round (think Europa league after missing CL qualification). It requres 6 players and they have to fit into various handicap bands 0-5 6-10, 11-14 etc but it is all the members of one of the greedies who get picked despite some others in the club being regular winners, topping the order of merit or being in good form and getting cut. The same clique seem to have carte blanche on how things are run and if your not in their little gang you will never get a game for the A or B teams

Love the Club team events. Played for the Scratch team a few times but more often for our second string.

We had a nice 6-0 home today and won 5 1/2 to 1/2 a couple of weeks ago.

Great fun, but can get expensive. We pay £15 which includes breakfast and sandwiches & chips after. Also a bit of a bummer when the matches clash with a medal or stableford qualifier.

That's a cracking record you've got there Homer!

I played four friendlies this year and they were great fun, but getting the time off work is the problem as they usually start mid afternoon.

I tend to play better as a partner in 4BBB. I just let people like HTL and Hawkeye (i.e proper golfers) get on with it and then pop in every so often with a sneaky par to win/halve a crucial hole. Mind you last time out I was 2 under gross after 4 and we were 4 up. Somehow it was all square by the turn but I then won 3 on the spin again by myself from the 10th and we were never in danger.

I find in any kind of singles event I lack the killer instinct and tend to let games drift when I should get them by the scruff of the neck and close them out. I get caught between wanting to play well and doing whats required.

Nine handicap is in no mans land.

Foxes 10 to 19. Tigers 0 to 7. So divisional matches are not avavilable. Scratch team is way out of reach.

Better off hacking it round off 11/12 really.

£15 !!!!
We use to pay £8 in the pairs handicap league, which was a 2 course meal, scratch league cost us £3 which was baguette and chips.
Most of the people i played against who played for private clubs, paid nothing.

We pay a tenner for the golf and 2 course meal which seems fair.

There is not really a clique in our team though as the new boy to the side I seem to get to play the courses furthest away (which is no more than an hour so fine by me).

As the games normally involve a 1.00 meet it makes a pleasant change as can get things done in the morning before heading out for a round.

I took over organising the men's team matches (pairs) at Westerham this year. Not a league, but friendlies against other clubs, such as Nizels, West Malling and Chartham Park.

We pay £12 for breakfast on arrival and sandwiches and chips afterwards. One away venue is £14 and is golf plus a two course carvery.

Team's record this year is P4, W2, L1, H1.

My record over the last 3 years is P12, W8, L2, H2.

I really enjoy these matches, and have now decided to put myself out second and then go round in a buggy once I'm finished in a Ryder Cup style manner.

Had many great moments playing for both our 2nd and 3rd teams. Chance to play other courses for a modest fee (basically just the cost of the food) and experience a bit of team spirit.

These are basically "friendly" matches on a home and away basis against local clubs. Pretty democratic team selection in that traditionally everyone who puts their name down will be picked for at least one match and the same team plays both home and away fixtures if at all possible.

Annual 2nd versus 3rd team match is a real event at our place. A bit like a derby match. The result can make a good season into a bad one and vice versa.

I played a few times for my old club in friendlies last year and enjoyed them. I think I played 3 times 2 wins and a defeat. The two wins were when I was partnered with the club captain. For some reason we seemed to gell really well and had a 5&3 and a 6&5.

Not been asked to play for RAGC yet...

So far I have played 2 matches, both times partnered with past captains. Won first time out 2 & 1 then 3 & 2 in the second match.

Not many friendly matches left this season but put your name on the board in the locker room and you might get picked. To be honest our fixture list is pretty poor and we really need someone to address that. The seniors seem to have matches against a lot of different clubs and I appreciate that closing the tee for an hour on top of all the other comps every time there is a match is a pain for the social golfer but these social matches are great fun. I've been at clubs where they have had local leagues which would be an interesting concept but I guess getting the fixtures is the first step
