Just after people's thoughts...

It probably doesn't happen too often but imagine if you fat a shot into the rough and can't find the ball so take a drop (or want to play a provisional from that point)..

As far as I understand you should drop the ball as near as possible to where you hit the original shot, I.e the divot. Does everyone drop directly over the divot? If you purposely drop slightly away from the divot are you breaking the rules?

Just cos everyone loves the detail... If you "cant find the ball" then it must mean you've already looked and also means a provisional is not an option

But as for the gist of the post then I agree with earlier that the divot will be replaced/repaired and if it's not (at clubs request) then I'd be dashed unlucky to end up back into it despite my best efforts to drop exactly there :D

What's to stop you replacing the divot before you drop?

I think rule 13-2 stops you from improving the lie in an area you are about to drop a ball... So maybe not in my scenarios, but if you know you've hit it OB and drop where you are you can't replace the divot first... If you replace the divot and then find out it's OB you're ok... Happy to be proved wrong on this...

so given that, you should be aiming for your divot with the drop...how many people do that?

Yep, try to drop where I was previously. Doesn't mean to say I get the plum bob out to try and be perfect but it's really not that hard to be accurate.

.... as was said it would be very unlucky to land in the divot, or bounce and go back into it. But equally you could drop and roll away and be in an even worse divot from someone else.
