I've been thinking about this for a while and would be interested in others views.

We all now we have access to swing analysis tools that were once only in the domain of a teaching pro. There are various cheap tools available for us to use. Ranging from Iphone and Android apps to PC apps like V1 Home and GASP etc. And a good range of cheapish camera's you can get from Casio that will capture at high fps so you can see every nuance of your swing.

All will let you record you're swing in much the same way a pro does with his fancy set-up and then analyse you're faults.

All sounds good right ?

I use V1, a High Speed Casio Camera. I also use my iPhone. All to do the above.

But I have some concerns.

Is diagnosing you're own swing faults and and fixing it yourself a sensible idea ?

I had a long chat with my pro about this the other week and he pointed out that a lot of people will try to fix the symptom and not the cause of the problem.

Without in depth PGA professional type training you'll actually be doing more harm than good.

Now I'm all for using technology when it is beneficial. I've stopped trying to fix my own faults and only use the software to work on things my pro has asked me to. Mainly so I can check if I'm doing what I think I'm doing.

But surly using this technology unguided is a bad thing unless you really know what you are doing ?

What do you guys think ?

I think its a great way to understand you own swing and find out what your doing.

Personally I think the best person to fix your swing is yourself and with the ability to see what your doing its a perfect combo.

Using video is a great way of seeing your faults.
Unfortunately, no one is going to get a perfect swing.
Trying to change something in your swing because it doesn't look right on the video can lead to months of frustration and heartache.
If, say your pro has asked you to make a swing change then yes, it is a great way to check on your progress.
Trying to fix your own swing as you have hinted can lead down a sad, long and expensive road. :(

You really have to understand the golf swing to do self-diagnosis and correction.

It is easy with these apps to do a comparision between your swing and a pro swing and see that x, y and z are different. However, the crucial part is knowing what needs to be fixed, why it needs to be fixed and crucially how you go about fixing it properly.

The last two points are best left to the pro or yourself *only* if you are very confident in how a golf swing works.

On the plus side, these apps are a great way (with pro lessons) to help learn properly and practice properly.

If used in comparison with yourself rather than just 1 vid of yourself on its own is OK. Probably best when compared to a video after a good lesson!

I do this and it has helped me to remember what the pro said and what he told me to do.

I have used the V1 software and GASP. GASP is better as I can e-mail my swing to my teaching pro for a quick analysis if something creeps in or if we've been working on something. I like to use video analysis but try not to get too technical or self diagnose other than looking at basics especially alignment and in my case losing spine angle and hip slide
