I have found that:

Brand a I hit really well off the driver & irons, but putter it is just uncontrollable.
Brand B I hit really well off the driver & irons, but not as long, put putter it is just totally controllable.

Am I allowed to hit ball A to the green, when I mark it & pick it to clean it, swap to ball B then putt out?

Didn't think so. Thought I would check. Cheers.

There isn't a massive gain in distance but every little helps. But I will stick with the loss in distance to gain control on the green.

As bobmac says, no. You can (generally) change balls between holes but not during play of a hole.

Generally? When can't you?

And just to be clear, we are talking of not being permitted to change balls in the play of a hole except where a Rule allows you to lift and substitute another ball.

Ok - he was talking about changing from Brand A to Brand B, so I should perhaps have put "brand of" between "change" and "balls".

Probably easier to just remove the (generally) rather than bringing a further irrelevance (brand) into it.

If you are thinking about the 'one ball' regulation being in play in your response it goes beyond brand - it's the absolute specification of any ball ie the '2015 model Titliest prov1x'. However few here will ever play in competitions that have this in place.

The answer is a definite No.

There only 2 instances I know of that you can change to a different ball during a hole please tell me if there's another.
1 - When when ball is lost, Water, trees or you just cant find it and its declared lost.
2 - When a golf ball is clearly damaged, I believe you have to ask your playing partners not sure of that part.

Try Rules 19-1b, 24-2 (Note 2), 24-3, 25-1b (Note 2), 25-1c, 26, 27-1 and 28 for example.
