Just wondering what the story is for this. Can you play for your handicap at any time as long as your card is marked by another member and you play off the measured course?

Or are the any restrictions to putting in a supplementary card?

Ta

A mate of mine did a card during the winter when the course was a lot shorter but no run. He had to sign the book in pro shop before his round and no more than 2 temps were allowed. He then knocked it around in level par and got cut too 5.1. He did risk going up point one but he was playing well. So the risk payed off plus another member had to mark his card

You have to declare you are doing it at the start of the round.

The really are for people who play minimal or next to no comps and not really for the regular medal player

Generally you have to sign that you are playing and submitting a supplementary card BEFORE going out. Maximum of 10 per year I think and no more than 1 in a single week.

An existing member with a handicap to mark is the norm.

I agree and yet we get people who play every comp for Ladies and Seniors and still submit one. The advantage is you pick the day (conditions), your playing partner AND it's the SSS not CSS. I think it should only be available for those who will play less than say 5 comps or something but that would be tricky to manage.

Fabian, these things seem to vary from course to course. Haddington, for example, doesn't really encourage Supplemantary Cards as they feel that there are enough opportunities through the season to hand in cards in competitions. Gifford, on the other hand, alllow you to submit up to 10 cards in any one year, as long as there is seven days between them and you sign the book before you play. I handed in a Supplementary Card in late March and got a 0.9 cut, but you have to also be prepared for a 0.1 increase too!! Good way to get additional experience off the Medal tees too.

Ask your club pro/secretary what their take on Supplementary Cards is and I'm sure they'll keep you right.

I was told that at the club you are only able to submit one if you are getting a handicap or your handicap has lapsed. I just wanted to check if that was the same at other clubs.

It would seem that I am unable to submit any at all as I already have a handicap. That disappoints me as I was looking forward to playing a few rounds in the summer to try and get a cheeky wee cut!

Fabian, get plenty medals in when the weans are on holiday and you'll get the cuts you deserve

My understanding of supplimentary cards is that you can decide to do it, the club can't stop you from doing it nor can they discourage it. It's designed to help shift workers like me who only get one weekend off a month.

That statement regarding getting a handicap or for a lapsed handicap is wrong. It is a requirement of the CONGU that all clubs provide the facility for supplementary cards and all category golfers with handicaps can as Amanda pointed out submit up to 10 in any given year with a maximum of one in any given week. This is quite clearly stated in the handicapping guide for clubs - if your club is affiliated to one of the home Golf Unions they must offer this facility.

He's Irish, and delb's from Edinburgh. These places make up their own rules. Nuff said.

Have you got a link by any chance? .....because when I asked about doing one at my club ( i am about to miss the next 3 out of 4 weekend qualifiers so wanted to redress the balance), i was told the club didnt encourage their use.
They think I already play enough qualifiers, (which I do), but I hate missing an opportunity to get the H/C down, especially if I am playing well.

I'd like to read the actual wording regarding supplementals so I can give an informed response.

edit:::; looks like someone just posted a link.........

Out of interest Rosie, what would happen if a club did breach the CONGU rules and got reported?
Any idea what would happen..?

Yes - you would contact your County Union whose ultimate sanction for non-compliance would be cancellation of affiliation - and I don't think any sensible club would let things go that far.
