Superb service at my club

Went out late yesterday evening with my nieces husband, not sure how many holes we would get in but our last four holes all head towards the clubhouse. Any way we played 15 and 16 OK and drove off on the 17th, we found my ball (unusually in the middle of the fairway) but not my partners, I played out the hole, and we then decided to walk in, the time 9.40.

We could see the bright lights of the clubhouse as we walked down the 18th fairway and thought it rude (and deserved)not to have a quick drink.

Horror the door was locked, after a couple of knocks on the door, who appears, the owner. Hi guys what can I do for you he says, then notices our bags behind us, are you still open for a drink I enquire, yes sure he says, its a bit warm in here I'll put the lights on on the terrace for you. didn't know there were people still out there this late he remarks.

I know all clubs need the money but to open up so late for just a couple of pints of lager, well what can I say. Our owner gets my prize for service to the customer over and above the call of duty.

its things like this that will have you renew your membership, and with so many clubs struggling you right, perfect customer service is what keeps you going back.

Turning this round a bit, if I was coming off our course at twenty to ten in the middle of summer and found the bar closed I would be looking for another club the following year.

Why?

Obviously the place was closed (because there wasn't any one still in there) and he didn't realise any one was still on the course as we went out reasonable late. Also we are on the east side of the country so 9.40 is pretty late to be hitting golf balls. And to be fair to the owner, if there is any one in the clubhouse he will stay open.

Sorry, just a different type of club to what I'm used to I suppose. Our club is open until 11pm 6 days in Summer (4 days Winter) .....and it isn't empty at last orders either. People use it socially though so when it goes dark is pretty irrelevant. I wouldn't even consider joining a club just for golf, the social element is central and that always revolves around a thriving bar.

I do appreciate though that smaller or more rural clubs will naturally be quieter and finances will dictate the opening hours. It was certainly good of him to stay open for you if that's the type of club it is. No offence intended.

No offence taken, far from it. But you some it up well with your reply and rural things. I live a 30 minute drive from my club so to me its not a place that I use for big social gatherings. I just thought that the fact that he had closed up and open up again for two pints of lager (one each I was driving)was excellent customer relations.

I played in a knockout match with HTL a Maidenhead the other week. The club knew we were going out an we were done by 8.15. The place was totally locked up and we couldn't even get into the locker room to rescue our shoes. I had to go back after work the next day and they had been chucked in lost property. It was less than 24 hours and it wasn't like I could get them any quicker.

I wouldn't have minded but there was the World Cup on and it was a hot and sunny evening in Summer. How does it make any money. No wonder the car park was empty if members have to rush off the course by early evening to get a drink or their gear.

My club will lock the outside locker room door but it stays open until 11 during the summer (you can into the locker room with your swipe card) unless all the members have left. I thought that would make sense so that evening golfers can get a refreshing pint
