Suggestions for golf weekend

Thanks for all the responses, some good suggestions there. Its going to be late September time so the weather should be okay hopefully!

I have always wanted to play Princes, didnt realise they would have a nice sports bar on site?
It will be during the Ryder Cup, so we will be playing during the day and watching at night and I wouldnt fancy getting 20 drunk blokes to a pub in the town and back. Cabs will be a nightmare etc...
Everything needs to be on site. The other question is where we would get onto Princes/Deal on friday, saturday and Sunday...pretty sure we would have no chance of getting onto Royal St Georges

Paul, have you stayed at Foxhills? Played there once and the bar area seemed quite reserved, dont know if there are other bars there? Woodhall Spa has also been mentioned a few times, but that looks quite far away from London...dont think we could driver there within 3 hours

Thanks again

George

princes don't have a sports bar on site. The lodge is good re accommodation, but it's like a library in terms of atmosphere & sandwich is where the old go to get some peace & quiet. We got turfed out of the curry house for having too much fun.

All the resorts I've been to have no atmosphere. Golf breaks do a Bournemouth 3 dayer, any combination of Ferndown/Parkstone/ Isle of Purbeck etc

or on less of budget, meryrick or Royal Iford :o

you could stay right in the mix then, and get amongst it !!!

Yes have stayed at Foxhills and the hotel is very nice. However if you're looking for a bit of atmosphere to watch the golf then probably not what you're after.

I think you could get to Woodhall Spa in under 3 hours. 'The Inn' underwent a refurbishment about 2 -3 years ago and is a great place to stay. Has it's own sports bar on site and nicely tucked away from the rest of the hotel so you can be as noisy as you like without upsetting anyone (hopefully!!)

However I don't recommend going through the entire cocktail list after a load of beer  But if you do and there's one on the list called 'The Bomber' then that is the one Blundell and I created! ;) Cannot for the life of me remember what was in it!! :D

It will be during the Ryder Cup,

Funnily enough, the last time I played at Princes was on the day that the Ryder Cup started at Celtic Manor in 2010.
Played with Robert Rock in a pro-am and have never been blown around so much on a golf course in my life.
On one of the par 5's Rock hit driver, 3 wood, 3 wood and still came up short!!

What a lightweight - there's no way he could be on the Forum then. Surely Driver, 5 iron into the wind for most on here!!! :fore:

If you want somewhere that does basic accommodation and won't mind you getting drunk, free drinks every night, good food, a snooker room and squash court and golf course that's enjoyable without being brilliant, then try Farthingstone, near Northampton.

If you fancy a bit of upmarket golf, Royal Porthcawl has a dormy house onsite and the bars/restaurants in town are walking distance.

I've booked a golf weekend there next year, not sure if your endorsement of calling the courses reasonable is good or not. ;)

Nothing wrong with them at all, there were some pretty illustrious names being thrown around as suggestions and so I used the term in comparison.

If you are looking for food out one night, head the couple of miles into the village and head for the Wheatsheaf. Great food.

Thanks guys...I reread it again and I am worried I am coming across as a bit of an alchoholic! For the record, we dont get rowdy, just a little drunk. Anyways, after that disclaimer...I have had a few aquantainces mention the following places: Hanbury Manor, Brocket Hall and Heythrop Park anyone been there and want to rule them out?

Woodhall does look good and Bournemouth as a package could get nice and messy

Paul...no sober man has ever ordered a cocktail called 'The Bomber'...did they name it after you after you won longest drive?

Ryder cup weekend 2016 we the central England mixed foursomes so the Hotchkin will be closed for the weekend.

I have played Heythrop Park and stayed in the hotel there. It is a Crown Plaza. Quite nice, albeit a little soulless. Course is quite good, but can get quite wet.

Cheers for the recommendation, but we're on a deal with evening meal so we'll no doubt be eating in the hotel. I've heard good things about the courses so looking forwards to it.

The bar at the Lodge at Princes is perfect for what you want. Play Deal on Friday, then Princes all day sat and Sunday.

With 20 of you and a few others the Bar get quite lively (make your own atmosphere) and you can get away with most things within reason. Good large screen too and a snooker table (a gym also)

Hanbury Manor is a lovely course and have only heard good things about Brocket Hall and Heythrop Park.

As for 'The Bomber' Blundell and I invented it whilst we were up there and named it after the Lancaster bombers that used to be based at Woodhall Spa and nearby airfields during WWII! The bar at The Inn is the 617 bar if my hazy memory is right!!

Check out the Norwich golf tour on www.golfdaysuk.co.uk. You stay in the centre of Norwich so close to the pubs and restaurants etc and then play two or three different courses in the area.

Golf Days UK are run by my stepbrothers and one of them, Ben, is registered on the forum as jchubs so could always drop him a PM or they have live help on their website.

Having organised trips for our crew (who sound similar) for the last 10 years ...my thoughts

ESN - fab facilities particularly no having to take your clubs with you at the end of each day ...leave with caddie master, club in the nearest town is shockingly bad :-)
S. Wales - we did combo of vale and Celtic - good courses especially views at the celtic - Caerleon is ok for a beer or two
Bournemouth - played Ferndown and Isle of Purbeck (v. good) plus couple of others, hassle was driving to and from courses, driver was always itching to leave :-)
Dartmouth - nice course and think they have new lodges
St Mellion - good if you want self catering - nichlas course is hard if you have lots of 28's
Stoke by Nayland - new lodges are fab, hotel a bit tired, staff great! courses ok
Dorset G&CC - 3 loops of nine i think, not bad though 1 nine is surrounded by (F*cking) rhododendrons - lost several balls to not really bad shots
Belton Woods - 2 nice courses and decent hotel - square in town is full of bars
Abbotsley - wouldnt go back

Thats 9....cos we did St Mellion twice

Have used golf breaks for last 3 trips and very good

Am thinking overseas this year

Hope that helps
