Thanks Patrick, you are probably right, maybe better do a trip only for highlands. Beside Royal Aberdeen and Cruden Bay would you have any other "must play" suggestion in the area? Murcar maybe?

I don't really know the Aberdeen area that well, other than the courses already mentioned. only Played Royal Aberdeen and some parkland courses, but hear Fraserburgh is ok.

Trump is supposed to be good, but not sure i would give The Donald my cash, will await a freebe there myself;)

I've done a couple of tours up that way and enjoyed Spey Valley and Boat of Garten and Grantown but whether or not they are must play...that's hard to say.

I know it's hard, I have to do choices, and maybe do other courses next year! :) Between Dornoch, Cruden Bay and RA what would you choose?

My Southport trip will be the week after this Scotland trip, will keep you posted! ;)

OO god, give me an easy question.:D

Royall Aberdeen's front 9 is on a par with Hillside's back 9, the rest of the course was good.

Cruden was great, and overall just shades Royal Aberdeen.

Dornoch - I think Cruden is better, but it is still boss.

If I was you, I would play Castle Stuart, Dornoch in one trip (possibly also Nairn(good), Moray and Brora, which I haven't played), as they are done then, and add on the Aberdeen courses, as you see fit.

Do Carnoustie on a separate trip, if doing mid-Scotland.

If I'm going to do a 4-5 day trip, I like to try and get all the premier courses in, so next time you can do a totally different part of the country, and not leave ones behind.

Then next time, you could hit all the Aberdeen courses in one go, and wouldn't have to travel too far - Trump, Cruden, Royal Aberdeen, Murcar are all within 25 miles of Aberdeen.

BTW - Hobbit is a member of Murcar, and a nice fella.

Course or club?

Dornoch is a wonderful club, with a fantastic course.

Cruden is a fantastic course(plus an extra 0.25 out of 10), and is a great club. Only a gnat's chuff inbetween them though.

Cruden has a bigger difference in the style of holes, and isn't an out and back course, and is more of a twisty-turny thing. Some people have been "institutionalised" in their course ratings.:ears:

Cruden was a bit of a disappointment for me. Course was not is the best condition with one temporary green, and another very strange dark green one that was about two on the stimp.;) Company probably didn't help either.:D

Murcar was much more to my liking, even though we played it in hail, and a gale blowing the wrong way. First seemed to be the only down wind hole on the course. Good company on that course.:D

Ok, courses booked as follows:
  • Day1: Carnoustie
  • Day2: Castle Stuart
  • Day3: Royal Dornoch
  • Day4: ??

Still to plan day 4 and what to do in the afternoon since all the tee times are in the morning. It's my first time in the Highlands, would you suggest to go and visit something in the afternoon, such as castles, cities or distilleries?

Thanks for all the suggestions!!

It would depend on where you are going to stay when you are up here?

a few to think about.

Loch Ness/ Urquhart Castle/ Inverness/ Fortose to see the Moray firth Dolphins.

Dornoch/ Glenmorangie Distillery/ Dunrobin Castle.

Depends on how many of you there are and when the dates i might be able to sort something for Nairn.
Otherwise;

Tain
Brora
Moray Old
Fortrose & Rosemarkie

if you fancy non links Spey Valley or Boat Of Garten

If Carnoustie is a definite (and it should be) then going up the coast from Dundee you've got - Monifieth, Panmure, Carnoustie (three courses), Arbroath and Montrose - all smashing courses - or across the water, Scotscraig, all the St Andrews courses, Kingsbarns and Crail then Lundin Links and Leven - all with minimal travelling

Yeah that Gordon is a grump, isn't he. :D

I'm still torn between Trump and Cruden as the most enjoyable course on our trip, but I liked them both above Murcar, and even then Murcar was a cracker, but just had a tepid end.

Hey guys,

back from the trip! weather has been incredibly clement, on 4 rounds the only true showers I got were on the 18th at Castle Stuart.

At the end I choose to do Carnoustie on the first day, then head to Inverness to play Castle Stuart and Royal Dornoch. I was looking for a last round close to the airport, and the only tee time I found that could have fit out schedule was Dunbar which is a lovely course.

Overall a great trip that I would suggest to anyone :)

Thanks for all the suggestions I received
Ciao
