Striking the Ball With the Back of a Putter

Evening all,

Can someone point me to the rule that states you can't hit the ball with the back of your putter? Question came up this weekend about it.

Cheers, CK

no :)

whilst this answers your question completely, it may help to be aware of the Rule that specifically permits it instead - 14-1/1 which includes

"A player may play a stroke with any part of the clubhead, provided the ball is fairly struck at (Rule 14-1) and the club conforms with Rule 4-1. "

Several of the lads I play with knock tap ins into the hole like this if the ball is to the left of the cup from where they are standing.

Don't think there is a rule though, especially when you see things like MAJ putting with his wedge after snapping his new putter

Straight and to the point. The putter is also the only club allowed to have 2 striking faces.

Thanks all, that's what I thought Darth but the pro seems to think there is. I asked him to show me the rule in the rule book so I had somthing to refer to when telling the membership and he was very vague. Will try and clarify with the head-pro this week.

Knew I could count on you guys :)

Notah Begay uses/d a Bullseye style putter (flat on both sides) right-handed for right to left breakers and left handed ('back of club') for left to right breakers.

No such rule.

but you can hit the ball with the back of any club if you so desire, why you would is beyond me, apart from having to move a ball left handed away from a wall or something- Like Gary Player did at Royal Lytham during the Open years ago

There should a book of BS rules. Since playing in club comps I have had several made up rules quoted at me. It's always "I'll let you off this time but....."

And here it is, the famous left-handed putt from next to the clubhouse wall:

Watch carefully around 1.09 as Player shifts soil with a practice backswing. 13-2 breach by improving the area of his intended swing? Apparently not or the video would hardly be posted by the R&A!

Actually never seen that before! WOW Kind of answers the question about one of the first things that come up when you type Gary Player into google!
