Ok. You have now looked in your Rule Book to find the relevant rule.
My question is that you are playing in a 4BB strokeplay or matchplay and your partner and your ball are in an almost identical postion on the green about 8 yards from the flag.

Your partner plays first and you offer to attend the flag. You will be on an extension to the line of putt when attending the flag. Am I in breach of the rule?

Simple, You stand to the side of the hole whilst tending the flag. You are not on extension of the line of the putt.

I always prefer someone who is tending to stand off to one side and tend at arms length.

Well clarification is perhaps needed from the experts because I read the rule as line extension 'behind' the ball not in front of it. I have always seen it this way, its written in this way.

If the ball, the hole and the "flag-attendee" are all in a straight line then yes, you are in breach. But who tends the flag like that? Doesn't everyone stand to the side of the hole to do it? Can't say I've seen anyone do it otherwise.

If you tend standing in a straight line with the ball-to-hole line then you will be standing on the players line if he misses. So not good ettiquette anyway.

Mind you in a tight matchplay situation........

Not saying you are wrong, but where does it say exactly what you have indicated?
