So anyone that hasn't blocked me from twitter yet may have noticed i had a small rant about street lights last night.

Basically, they have replaced the traditional lights with LED ones, while i appreciate the potential 'green' benefits of these, they are so blooming bright! Seriously, with the blinds closed in my living room, its lit up like Xmas!!

Where do i find the rules/guidelines on brightness of streetlights? They are far to bright for what is a no through road! Not like i live on a main road!

Anyone have any ides? I am going to get my ladder out and use some gaffer tape to block the light shining toward my house, but they are sooo bright, seriously, I have been to sports stadiums with less bright lights!

reckon the one by us have been changed too it is noticeably brighter out but fortunate the one outside ours shines away from us.

Surely the low energy one would be better with the dim light at dusk whilst they warm up.

We've had them fitted up here and the complaint is the opposite, the previous orange ones gave out a lot of ambient light, the LED ones are brighter directly below but cut out the light polution, apparently. The complaint up here is that the older ones in a street lit up the whole street and you could see all cars, gardens etc. The new ones leave the shadows and surrounding areas very dark.

funny enough we just had them put in our lane. the old ones hardly ever worked and though its not been an issue over the summer with it being so light up here till late, but as the nights started drawing in its been pitch black along there and freaks the wife out when she has been out alone and walked home.

They came last week and put in brushed SS poles almost double the height of the last ones, they were switched on Monday.. its like daylight down there, our driveway is about 100 yards long and thats now lit up along with the whole lane.

They certainly are much, much brighter than the others, which are still there and look rather feeble alongside the new ones.

Found the local council has a portal for reporting things such as this, so have fired off a form. will most likely be fobbed off, so will filter it myself with tape.

I know you shouldnt have to fork out cash Scott but blackout blinds are an option ,

Ive a big bay window in the bedroom , without these the whole place lights up at 4.30/5 in the summer .. great job

That's awful, might have been installed wrong, ours point down almost like they have a lamp shade on them, like I said, really bright underneath, but very little outwards on an arc!

had ours done about a fortnight ago, made everywhere a bit dark ,wife dosent like them at all says there are too many dark shaddowy places now .it must be costing the local councils a few bob to change all these bulbs, and what are they going to do with all the old ones?

LED/Brighter street lights can ONLY be a good thing. Why would anyone want darker streets at night, especially with kids.

Because it lights up my house inside at night? I would rather no lights if i'm honest. Potential thieves etc would have to use torches etc thus spotting them would be easier! Can you tell I grew up in the country where the only lighting outside was the sun or moon!

The camera blows out highlights, it wont look like that in real life

True, its not quite as per the pic. But it is still crazy bright for the location it is installed in.

here is a pic from inside my living room with living room lights off at 10pm last night...

Don't know what you complaining about, you're getting free light so you can save a fortune on electricity. Jeez, some people moan about anything.....;)

On a more serious point I think brighter lights at night is generally viewed by most people as a good thing. Surely people would rather live on a well lit street with all the safety benefits that brings than one that is dimly lit?

Surely you can have a well lit street without having the ensure all the house are illuminated all through the night

A nice balance
