Strange thing happened to me today

I done this in our club champs the other week. 3rd hole had a 10ft putt for birdie and address the ball and stupidly hit the ball moving my putter behind it. Que walking off with a bogey 5. First and last time I will do that.

I did this in an open last month, playing with a 2 and +1 handicapper. neither of them knew i had to replace it. concerns me a lot

To me it does seem counterintuitive. I would never have thought you would need to replace the ball if you had incurred a penalty, seems a little unnecessary.

As always though, there's bound to be a reason for the rule being the way it is? Cant think what that is mind you.

to me it makes perfect sense. imagine if you slipped and knocked it 20ft backwards? you wouldn't be too pleased. especially if your opponent did the same and it went close to the hole.

The definition of a stroke is essential to stop scooping,pushing & all sorts of attempts that are not right etc , & putting stroke has to come under it aswel as a result ,

Surely it's got to happen at least once to everyone, maybe that's why it's not worth knowing the rule as you'd only do it once.......hopefully.
