Straighter or longer

Once you've learnt to hit it straight(ish), learning to manipulate it left or right will come next. No one I know has a truly straight ball flight, they all have a natural shape be it left or right. However, the difference between that natural shape being a destructive hook or slice to something workable (take Rory's natural high-draw, but can hit a soft fade on demand - sometimes....) is massive. I'd work on your go-to shape being the one you control (turn a slice into a soft-fade) then once you've mastered that you can turn it into an on-demand draw, which can equate into more distance too.

If you could have a controllable, constant, gentle fade and be 10 yards longer, would you want it..?

Yes, but that wasn't the question posed....10 yards longer left or right doesn't suggest anything controllable or constant!

Agree with those suggesting 10yds shorter on the fairway, rather than off it, is a no brainer. In fact most of the time a ball travelling 10 yrs further in the wrong direction won't be 10 yrs nearer the hole at all!

Unless I missed something in the thread, is this left to right a nice gentle fade, or is it a big old slice?

I always play with a fade off the tee and it isn't a problem if it is a consistent shot shape.

With the shaft that tends to go left to right for me it is a fairly easy thing to adjust for but it can still leave me in the right rough particularly on a couple of holes that really need a slight draw but those holes tend to be 3 shots to the green for me anyway.

I'll probably give both another trial before making my mind up.

Thanks for comments.

My apologies Imurg....innow have my glasses on and see that it was stated left to right, not left or right!

Completely agree with you - take the 10 yds and compensate .

As a self-confessed short hitter, ten yards extra would be greatly received. However as my accuracy off the tee was only 42% last season, I'd rather be straighter and foresake the extra yards. Playing off the fairway more often would let me plan my next shots better and put it in the optimum position to use my short game to get close and hope for an up and down

With driver 10 yards further please.
With everything else I’ll take accuracy over distance.

10 yards not enough difference for me tbh, I'd take 10 yards shorter but guaranteed fairway every time.

If you're up to 20/30 yards difference then longer all day.

Think your underestimating yourself , with the driver distance you posted on here your not a short hitter just about average for your h/c.

Straighter is my choice.
