The blurb: 'Stoke Rochford Golf Club lies 6 miles south of Grantham and is accessed from the A1 North bound. The Golf Course is located in the picturesque parkland estate of Stoke Rochford. The course was formed in 1923 and the 18 hole layout is extremely scenic and interesting.
The course is one of the most attractive and interesting golf layouts in Lincolnshire and the East Midlands with its interesting contours, 4 river holes over the Cringle Brook, its playability, except under the severest of weather conditions, and the tremendous variety of flora and fauna.'
The reality: The golf club has claim to one of the quirkiest entrances in golf. It can only be accessed through a garage forecourt which itself can be accessed only from the A1 heading North.
Attractive - certainly, interesting - definitely, playable - with care, you have to think your way round this one. Blasting away with a driver will only work just so far - then it will bite.
From the very first tee shot the contours come into play, too far right and your second is blocked, too far left and the second is squeezed by overhanging branches. Oh and the green also slopes left to right too.
- and while we're on that subject, few of the greens are flat. Oh, they roll smoothly, but lots of gradients, guarding bunkers and borrows to negotiate. Hitting them can be one thing, stopping the ball quite another.
If there is a signature hole it's the 7th. 195 from an elevated tee to an elevated green, with water and bunkers to carry. (That reminds me - some steep gravelled paths, so anchors may be needed to stop the trolley running away.
a good claimant for the title has to be the 13th. A short par 4, but it's all uphill (this view is deceptive, the 'short' path on the left is a lung buster going up and a nervous descent with a trolley coming down from the 9th). if you are a little off line those trees narrow the gap considerably, hit it low and you won't make it over the ridge - but a birdie is equally a possibility.
What else - staff are very friendly, nice clubhouse and a very welcoming halfway house overlooking the 10th green. Both sausage and bacon rolls are recommended.
How good is it - it's just on an hour from me, if i can swing it I'll be applying for country membership.
