I've been playing golf for just over a year now and am still trying to break 100, 101 is currently my best at Wyboston
lakes earlier this year but haven't got close to that since.
however i'm not a member at anywhere and so very rarely play the same course twice in succession as there's a very wide choice within 1 hours drive of home. Although it's nice to play in different surroundings every time i now think i'll never break 100 by going to an unknown course every time. Now the weather has finally improved i'm tempted to join a local club so i can play more often and get to know a course like the back of my hand in order to improve my score.
problems are that its a considerable initial outlay (approx £700) and my usual playing partner likes to play at different clubs although he's even further off breaking 100 than me.
How did ereryone else pass significant milestones? just consistently playing the same holes week in week out and nailing 1 particualr course or adapting to different courses, conditions etc in order to improve their game.

I would suggest a bit of both. Apart from taking lessons and lots of practice, the best way to improve is to play with better players and learn from them. Join a club and play in competitions, ideally with different people of varying standards.

There is nothing to stop you playing other courses as well. Once in a club you are sure to get in with a group of guys that have trips away. Also, play in open competitions as well, a cheap and fun way to play other courses.

Playing one course will focus your game and you will achieve your goal .. Eventually.

Playing many course will improve your game, and will give you some good valuable lessons in course management too.

Btw: you may find it easier to achieve targets like break 27 over par etc ... Playing a much shorter course should give you the break 100 barrier much quicker ;)

Thanks
I probably should have added that there is 1 course i've played more times than others (10 mins from home and 20 from work) but it is a short 9 hole with an excellent driving range. My best there is 47 i think but it's basic par 3's and 4's and put me on a proper 18 hole course and it's lost balls, scuffed fairway drives and a dodgy short game resulting in triple figure scores. I can't even remember the last par i scored on a hole on an 18 hole course.
