Steve Williams -----Kingmaker? Discuss

Having watched the last play off hole, it is interesting that Williams is giving Scott plenty of advice on the winning putt. He is right in his face. Interesting to know what was said, perhaps he was giving him the line. He certainly should have some good input on the greens, and if he just read one for Scott, it could have made all the difference.

Still don't like him though, but that is often the case with people that are at the top of their game.

I did like the way Cabrera shouted at the crowd to be quiet in the play off.

What I think of Williams would win me an infraction but I don't think it is any coincidence how Scott has made such a renaissance since the Kiwi took the bag. He is a grat caddy but a poor human being

If you mean poor as in donated over a million dollars to the Auckland childrens hospital , couldn't agree more .

Exactly. You are going to need a big ego to tell multi millionaire sportsmen what to do surely? Im pretty sure hes not bothered what people think and i doubt i would bother if i was that good at making money by telling people what to do :)

No you don't need a big ego; you need a hell of a lot of self confidence and you need to be damn good at your job, but the ego and the attitude are optional extras. As to whether or not he's a good caddie, how well has he done with other players? I'm not suggesting he's not good, but surely your chances of being on the bag for 14 Majors increases with the quality of player you caddie for. What's his track record with lesser players; how many of them has he carried to Majors?

He done a tough job caddying for woods, the crowd that follows tiger around golf courses is huge and they can be very in your face aswell, perhaps his boisterous nature has come from trying to keep the crowd for harassing his boss????? As for the racist comment he made, IMO it sounds like it was a private joke between the 2 of them.
His 14 win tag on the majors though is largely down to the fact he caddied for tiger, lets see how many he wins with Scott.

I think that the earlier observation about the discussion on the first play off hole is the difference Williams makes. When you stand over the ball you need 100% confidence in the shot you are about to hit. I think Williams gives him that but has also probably gir a phenomenal amount of knowledge about the courses. At Augusta hitting the right part of the green is crucial as was demonstrated by dear old Ken. You can hit a great shot to the wrong part and be screwed. Kingmaker? No. But a very, very good caddie

Interesting that Cabrera came runner up, with his son on the bag. He didn't seem to need some one else to bolster his confidence. He didn't seem to need to discuss club selection, and I didn't see much discussion regarding yardage either. A lot less faffing about in general.

His caddy carried the bag, and kept things dry. Perfect. Let the golfers golf, and caddies carry, and let's see golf played in nearer to 4 hours than 6.

I couldn't believe it when Scott pulled out the yardage book the second time, after all the discussions, club selection, ego boosting from Williams, he still needed to look in the book again. Get on with it!

And he was short with it.

They over think it sometimes.
Scott may have been better off looking once and hitting it - which is basically what Cabrera did.....

Too much thought in this game sometimes...

Caddies are overated in this game especially this particular individual. I dont doubt they add some thing when it comes to perhaps yardages and wind etc. Its always nice to have a discussion about things before you release to enable relaxing etc but for gods sake get on with it!! Golf is far to slow in every form at the moment  Lets be honest any half decent golfer hits what he thinks is the right club and not what some hyped up egotistical bag carrier tells him. If you listen to their conversations on the TV Adam decided what to hit Williams just agreed and said go for it. Big deal!

Trainers and coaches spend hours before the round working on swings and techniques and the mental game whilst the likes of Williams are doing interviews or polishing shoes. If they were oh so important they'd be getting more than 10% at the end of a round. Tiger Woods has won 14 Majors because hes a talent as is Adam Scott. Tiger was winning with Fluff on the bag. Adam has won over 20 tour events not all with Williams. Its the golfer who has to line up deal with the pressure and execute. Now replace that divot Williams and clean my grooves :)

I can understand the importance of a local caddie for the likes of Guan who doesn't have the experience of the course and where to hit the greens etc. But this has another problem as the caddie doesn't know the players game which didn't seem as important as course knowledge to Guan in the end.
Williams seems to think he is the missing link to the players game!

I dont see it - Adams is an experienced player already playing at the highest level in over 10 masters and hundreds of tour events with over 20 wins. hes also a natural golfer with a superb swing and confidence. I could understand it if the player was on his first outing and never played the course or a Major before.

Playing the last hole on a major with a chance to win has to played the same as any other event you can win and any other hole with of course some added nerves....he will be thinking that and managing it from what he learnt himself over the years and from his team before regardless of what Stevie says.... If its a six iron its a six iron.... relax make a good swing and commit. It doesn't need a 10 min discussion to inflate the caddies already over inflated ego. Adam has to make the shot not the bag carrier. That said Im sure Adam has dedicated his win to Williams and now he can write his book.....

There are many good caddys on the tour for sure.
But how many ar great caddys?.
Imo Steve Williams is a great caddy, yes he might have a big ego,and maybe a bit arrogant, but
i think you need that something that others havnt got.
Telling a multi major winner[Tiger] hes got the wrong club, and then taking the flak if its the
wrong choice takes a certain type of person.
Dont forget these players have massive egos too.
Tiger made a lot of wrong club choices during the week, maybe im wrong but it seemed
to me he wasnt happy with his caddy at times[could be lookin to change].
I also think a great caddy has the ability to change a player during a bad round, these
are the things we dont see or hear about.
I do agree with Amanda though,as soon as that putt went in Steve was straight in there.
