Steve Williams -----Kingmaker? Discuss

Would someone be kind enough to educate me as to why he is not liked? This is the guy who wrote the kiss and tell about Tiger ye? Is this why he is not liked?

This is also the ingrate who described his former employer using the N word. The man who made him a multi millionaire. Class.

He claims all the credit for tigers majors, and gives none to tiger. He takes cameras off people in the gallery and breaks them.

Caddies carry bags, clean clubs and give yardages. Their value is overstated, by the players too!

They don't hit the shots.

I think good caddies also help to moderate the players emotions and keep them focused on the task in hand until the cross the finish line. An example of a bad caddie would be Jean van de Velde's at The 1999 Open. If he had a stronger, expereienced caddie (such as Steve Williams), he would have most likely won.

He was also a relentless self promoter, apart only from the times when he was promoting his sponsor, an oil maker.

Remember his habit of taking off his caddy bib on the 18th? - that was to show the sponsor's logo on his shirt.

Don't like racist language, in what form did that come? press conference or ??

It was at an after dinner speech a few years back, just after the split.

He didn't use the 'N' word as suggested but something similar to what John Terry was alleged to have said to Anton Ferdinand, with a more diluted profanity. It says it in the article - I ain't getting no infraction for posting it here!

John Feinstein described Williams as "one of the most unpleasant individuals you could come across". That will do for me.

I am really keen to watch some interviews with him this evening to see if I can get a handle on his personality.

Did he? I thought he ran straight to Adam before he'd even had much of a chance to celebrate himself? Memory could serve me wrong though but I recall thinking it was so typical that he jumped in so fast...

no you are right, what I meant was after he had celebrated with Adam (they are a team and most caddies do the same) he didnt go straight to Angel but let Adam and Angel congratulate each other. sorry for the confusion.

I really think all be brings to Scott is confidence, I say 'all' obviously it's a major thing. I just don't think his self apparent skill is that great. Would woods of been less dominant with a different caddy? I doubt it. He defo has had an effect on Scott but I don't think he's the holy grail, just lucky timing.

he's obviously an excellent caddie, not a fan of his off course antics but that's off course!

I thought he conducted himself well during the Masters and especially at the end where he showed respect by ensuring Adam and Angel congratulated each other first.

+1. Can't say I'm that fussed on the guy but I was impressed the way he stood back and let Scott & Cabrera shake hands, and immediately after he stood back as the camera came onto the green for a close up.

Maybe some of what he's said in the past has been embelished by the media, now there would be a shock. And just maybe he isn't the ogre many see him to be.

Sort of agree with this.

Cabrera was basically "caddying" for himself with his boy carrying the clubs. He was working out yardages etc himself rather than relying on a caddy. Didn't do too shabby a job either!

A caddy does a lot more than just carry clubs and give yardages. Anyone who has played in top level events will realise this.

They give 2nd opinions, point out things that the player may have missed such as wind direction etc, read greens, advise on all sorts of things. They also promote confidence in the player allowing him to focus on hitting the right shot knowing that everything else has been covered.

Much more than bag carriers!

Which is presumably why they pay the same guy 10% to follow them round the world, rather than pay a local bag carrier much much less to do the same?

I don't disagree that you have to hit the shots, but they must be doing something for them.

What I think of Williams would win me an infraction but I don't think it is any coincidence how Scott has made such a renaissance since the Kiwi took the bag. He is a grat caddy but a poor human being

He's a good caddy but started working for Scott a couple of months after he started using the long putter which Scott has said taught him how to putt again. Which has had more influence is a question we'll never answer but Scott has always been good tee to green, now he can putt
