When I got fitted for my irons, I was told 1/2” long and the fitter also said he was either hard or soft stepping the clubs, can’t remember which. He explained that this was a different shaft for the head, eg 7 iron shaft in 8 iron or other way round. As my fitting was a while ago and I am thinking of selling these clubs, can anyone tell me how I work out which way the shafts were swapped and whether this is hard or soft stepped?
Many thanks

Hard stepping is putting a 7 iron shaft in to a 6 iron.
Soft stepping is putting a 6 iron shaft in to 7 iron

If they are True temper Shafts you can go on the TT website look at the trim/fitting charts and look at the distance between the first taper and the end of the shaft.

If they are .370 tip shafts it is possible to step in stages.

Thanks for that, will have a look later.
Also, what is the purpose of stepping?

To get the best match of shaft stiffness to your swing speed.

In simple terms - In any given shaft the flex is determined by how far the bend point is from the hosel, put it closer to the hosel and you stiffen the flex.

Stepping makes about a third of a flex difference
So hard stepping a regular and soft stepping a stiff will get you a whisker either side of right in the middle of regular and stiff
