Stenson's No-Tee Driving

Watching the Players and admiring Henrik Stenson's imperious display during the final round, I was even more impressed with him not using a tee when driving with his 3 wood. It takes some confidence to tap a little bit of turf up and perch your ball on it ready to send it down the middle (as he invariably did)- especially on the 18th hole when he ripped a perfect drive into position 'A'.

I wonder whether this method might hold some merit as I tend to hit my 3 wood better from the fairway or light rough than from a tee peg? My feeling is it might come accross as slightly arrogant - like those that drop a ball to the ground and hit it where it lies on Par 3's - and potentially embarrasing if a duff ensues.

Anyone else have any experience of 3W driving from the deck?
Give it a try, Snaphook. Lots of players hit a 3 or 5 wood better from the deck than from a peg. And on the tee you can look around for a nice wee tuft to perch your ball on.
It's easier than it looks.

Brendy that was a good little read, very interesting indeed. I don't know what my swing speed is with my driver but I would have a guess at around 95 - 100. I know that with my irons its 84 mph, I feel as though I 'hit' my driver harder but I would like to find out :)

Mmmmm i'm guessing there is a fair bit of 'leg pulling' going on here?

I am considered a long hitter and have won many longest drive comps but my swing speed was measured a 105 and i regularly crank it out to 280 - 290yds......so a swing speed of 120 from an amatuer would not only hit it miles (even on miss-hits) it would be......unbelievable!

Back on topic...

I really like hitting my 3 wood of the deck. It just feels right! Even when i'm hitting it from the tee i use a really short tee pushed almost the hole way in. I think i have a fear of getting under the ball.

Most 3 woods are designed to be hit off the fairway anyway, so hitting it off the tee box grass can't be that much different - especially on the near perfect grass at the courses the pros play.

I had the good fortune to play with Stenson in a pro Am. I've played at watched a lot of golf but never seen anyone hit it so straight and so good. It was like a cruise missile when he hit his driver.

i enjoy hitting my hybrid like this!! feels like a more natural shot to me. the tee just complicates things!!
