Stenson's No-Tee Driving

Watching the Players and admiring Henrik Stenson's imperious display during the final round, I was even more impressed with him not using a tee when driving with his 3 wood. It takes some confidence to tap a little bit of turf up and perch your ball on it ready to send it down the middle (as he invariably did)- especially on the 18th hole when he ripped a perfect drive into position 'A'.

I wonder whether this method might hold some merit as I tend to hit my 3 wood better from the fairway or light rough than from a tee peg? My feeling is it might come accross as slightly arrogant - like those that drop a ball to the ground and hit it where it lies on Par 3's - and potentially embarrasing if a duff ensues.

Anyone else have any experience of 3W driving from the deck?

My guess is that he was having problems going left so did away with the tee so he could squeeze it out and take the left side of the course out of play??

I find driving hard enough (3 wood for safety yesterday and watch it sail OB) so why make it harder by not using a tee. May be ok for low handicappers but not for me I'm afraid

im good at drivng with no tee and it has never been a problem for me im not very comfortable with a 3 wood but with a 5 wood i can hit most small par 4's in one go.

I've drove a small par 4 at TonyN's place roughly 260.......... I was using my driver tho

I must admit its the only track i've played with a par 4 so short and a par 3 so long (230 ish if i remember correctly)

well not as good with the 3 wood and don't take it out much. my driver is poor as it is a M speed and 12* so can only hit it same as 5 wood but was hitting the 909 into the trees at the end of driving range so more than 250

Whats wrong with the m speed its a decent club.

More than 250 so id say you are ripping it miles for your age well any age for that matter,iam not having a long drive contest with you;-)

i am easily a F speed. swing speed was recorded at 120mph at the weekend

120 is top tour player speed Adam Scott, Lee Westwood etc etc

I have used a Cobra X speed for 18 months before my Srixon and have quite a high clubhead speed of 110-114 and play x flex in everything mainly to keep spin down

But say if you swing at 120 but only hit the ball 250-260 like you say you must be missing the middle of the face by a mile
