steel or graphite shafts ?

Morning all on this glorious hot day,can anyone tell me if there has been a question asked about the differnce between steel and graphite shafts,besides the obvious two different materials,if so what is the link ?Otherwise would like forumers thoughts on this.All replies appreciated

The other main difference is weight, steel shafts are invariably far heavier than the graphite ones (and arguably more stable)

Its a tricky one now as some of the iron graphite shafts are so well made and some of the steel shafts are so light that it is not as black and white as in the past. It was the case that graphite iron shafts used to be for older players or players carrying long term injured (might be time for your Steve!!) as they were lighter and often could be made very flexible.

All that said I still do not think they are worth the extra money for anyone who is not elderly or injured as there are so many great steel options available at a much lower price and that will last longer.

Down to your own personal taste or swing.

There is nothing these days to distinguish them in terms of longevity as suggested above, this was sorted long ago. Graphite shafts will easily last your lifetime, same as steel.

Mainly its down to weight. If you have a slow or smooth swing, then the graphites can help, or simply if you prefer them. I cant remember the exact swing speeds, but i have a smooth slowish swing and with a 6 iron, changing from steel to graphite shafts increased my swing speed by about 5-6mph, to about 87mph (if i recall correctly).

I did this on the Cleveland fitting day, courtesy of GM & Cleveland.

So just try both, I had no opinions either way, and just let the fitter guide me and went with whatever he suggested. After all, it's his job! I'm VERY happy with the results too.

I was more talking about the chipping at the tip from knocking together with other heads, bag rash from rubbing and the like than them splitting or anything like that. For sure the manufactures make them well.
