I'm joining a new club next year, I've been accepted at 1 club and waiting for interviews next week at another 1.

The club I've been accepted sent through an invoice today for next years fees. Couple of items I wasn't expecting. Player insurance £3.50, no problem, seems sensible enough, but then "Staff Gratuity £5.00". Are you kidding me ? Am I really being forced to tip the staff for service I haven't even received yet ? I know it's only a fiver but people making assumptions like this really wind me up, it's like when you get handed a pin machine in a restaurant with the option open to leave a tip.

If, and it's a big if, I decide someone has given me exceptional service then I might tip, I'll be fecked if I'm paying one in advance.

Does anyone else pay this ?

Personally I would refuse to pay and would suggest to the club secretary that I will tip who I want, how much I want and when I want to. I would also point out I would probably tip a lot more than £5 in total, so everyone should be happy.

I would deduct the amount from my membership fee invoice.

Strikes me a very strange that you tip in advance by invoice and such a small amount.

At the very least I'd call up the club secretary and ask exactly what that £5 is for and whether it's optional. It may not put me off joining if the club was a good one but it's always worth asking the question.

No, just one off £5, it's the principle that wound me up, not the cost.

The total fees wen I went for the interview were £990, invoice landed for £1063.50. Fees up + insurance + tip

Maybe it's for something else.... diary, pitchmark repairer, bag tag or something? Dare I say it even goes towards a staff Xmas box so the secretary doesn't have to beg all the members each year.

If it's £5 for a whole year it's not really worth worry about is it? Just win your first game for £5 and it's back in your pocket, if that game is against Smiffy it's practically guaranteed! :)

Like Tommo said, I wouldnt let a fiver put you off joining if this club is your preferred choice. If you do join, when you do receive exceptional service from Bar Staff, waitress etc then just say.... "thanks for the great service, now go see the Secretary for your tip"

Did I mention there is a £3 per head "organising gratuity" included your Machrihanish deposit for my time and excellent service ensuring the trip runs like clockwork!

:D :D :D :D

If you had to go for an interview, I reckon you're joining a club where most of the members NEVER tip! ;)

It does seem odd. I can see it making more sense (but still questionable) if you're renewing, but not as a new member.

Spoken to the club, it's a fund that is carved up by the staff at the end of each year, not optional, take it or leave it. If my interview at the other club goes well next week then it won't matter anyway, but otherwise I'll probably just swallow it as it's the best course in the area that hasn't got a waiting list.

Crawford, £3 is a bargain for your sparkling company, I'll get Smiffy to send it straight to you in lieu of me beating him whenever we manage to play

Paying a tip in this manner, or by adding it to a credit/debit card payment means it is taxed and goes into the business coffers. If I am out for a meal or similar, I would pay a tip with cash. That way it goes to the individual and not the boss.(Or company if it is a large business)

The way some clubs are run just beggars belief. Why they make a rod for their own back like this is simply stupid. They may already have lost a new member for the sake of a petty rule (perhaps more?). At the very least there will be a lot of griping and it will probably be worse for the staff with low tips the rest of the time. What if a well established member refused to pay? Would they be expelled? I doubt it for the sake of a fiver. I'd guess that they would "let it go" which would make a mockery of it anyway. Just put the fees up £5 and pay for a staff "Christmas do" or whatever and let them get the tips they deserve the rest of the time.

Had it have been £50.00 I might have had something to say but a fiver isn't worth the hassel. Once you get there I'm sure the staff will be lovely. It's only a pro v1 anyway.
