Stableford or Medal?

I am not convinced. An N/R is an N/R. I don't ever remember seeing anyone cut after an N/R. You just get 0.1 back.

I had a blob on a hole in a card which, when corrected for Stableford, had me cut 0.4.

The rule (Appendix 5 in the CONGU regulations) makes no distinction between whether the stableford correction would offset an increase or cause a decrease.

If your club does not apply this rule properly, they need to read the regulations.

Don't forget that for the purposes of handicap adjustments, all rounds are stableford.

That's what I thought, but in my first medal on Saturday I carded an 88 off 11. I had 2 triples and the css was 74 so I thought I was inside my buffer zone of 2 shots, but I got 0.1 back.
When I entered all the details into SS2 it also suggested that I should get 0.1 back. I'm confused.

How certain are you that medals are scored as stableford for h'cap purposes?

Certain. My club does it, and see also:

If some of your triples were at non shot holes (index 12-18), those scores should be adjusted to double bogey for handicap purposes.

They as in medals, certainly are.

Your post just beat me to the draw, and hence mine appears after yours, in a non sensical order.

I prefer medals - I seem to concentrate better, knowing I always have to be in play. In stablefords I sometimes get a bit wild playing Seve type shots that I don't need to. As Bobmac suggests a boring 6-5 is better than an exciting 8-7.

I think medal is the purest form of competitive golf and I like the intensity of it knowing that every shot counts. However when my game is off I like the freedom of stableford knowing that one hole isn't the end of the round. That said I enter every event at my club irrespective of the format and as they are normally divisionalised (with the exception of majors and gold letter events) I know I'm competing on a level(ish) playing field and that being division 1 I'm unlikely to encounter too many 43 points or nett 63's and so anything under my handicap has a chance of a top 5 and some OOM points.

Thanks. That is what I thought you meant!

That's solved my confusion. I never even thought about them being holes I got a shot on. :o

Medal makes me concentrate more as every shot counts. If I start having a poor round I give up after a time, if I have a decent round I always produce a good score but rarely wins these days.lol

Since they're both technicaly strokeplay events and it's a number that's put on the card, not a picture, just get out there and enjoy yourself. Don't get too hung up on Medal and Stableford, it's only a game.

Hit it, find it and hit it again :D

my saying is that look after the strokeplay and the stapleford will look after itself.

my friends like saying "Oh yes i get 3 points on that hole!" or "Two strokes coming up!" i say what ever i will add up the points later and just keep trying to roll out pars and bogeys.

Strokeplay.
A mate of mine is a total and utter bandit off 16. He only ever wants to play Stableford. Offer to play medal and he gets the hump and doesn't want to play.
Playing Stableford he knows that he can totally cock up on certain holes (which he does) but can then retrieve his chances of winning the money by knocking out a fair few three pointers playing the par 3's and easier par 4's (which he also does).
He hates the SI 17 & 18 holes because he never scores 3 points on them.

Not really IMO, if you exceed the number of strokes to gain points on a hole, then playing the hole out with a 10 strokes is irrelevant in stableford and so not like stroke play where every shot is counted as the score and not the points. ;)

Medal for me. I seem to focus more and have better rounds on medal comps than in stapleford. That said, stapleford comps at my club are no easy option as you tend to need over 40 points to win so cannot really afford a blob and tend to play in a similar safe style to how I do in medals.

I like playing medal rounds if I have a disaster I know that I'm not the only one as anyone can have a bad hole. it's how you recover on the next few holes that count. Stableford is easy, oh dear a 7 pick the ball up move on, no damage done.Far too many golfers protect a false handicap by only playing Stablefords.

Enjoy playing both games, as far i am am concerned i want to play the best golf i can no matter what format.
Medals are the purest form but variety is the spice of life.
Our club use the yellow tees on saturday, white tees on sundays and this weekend we are using the blues--all 7000 yards-looking forward to this as the course is totally different from the blues.
